In which Sir Winston Churchill makes his first visit to the vet →[More:] Last month we inquired about a dog we had found, wondering what breed he is. Mrs. Doohickie liked the idea that he is a greyhound-shepherd mix. Anyway, we decided to keep him. He is named Winston Churchill.

We took him to the vet today for the first time and found out:
. He is healthy except for having hookworms (which he was treated for).
. He is just now about 13 weeks old (based on his tooth development).
. He already weighs 30 lb.
. The vet guessed the dog as being a shepherd-pit mix.

Neither of us is crazy about pit bulls, but he his what he is. Mrs. Doohickie is sticking with the greyhound-shepherd idea. We also thought he was about 3 months old when he showed up last month. He was more like 9 weeks; barely weened.

Well, I was actually, when I mentioned (in an off-hand way) "Neither of us is crazy about pit bulls." And then the pro- side showed up. So I guess I started it, even if I didn't mean to.

Oh, I didn't mean to raise a ruckus, I was just punning off of amro's "bad rap" comment (although the org. I linked to does great, and I think very important, work, and I've supported them for years).

I'm not terribly interested in a pit debate unless someone is advocating a breed ban, which nobody here is, so I think we're all good and happy with waggledy tails and panting tongues.

Anecdotally, as someone that has made all or part of his living working with dogs for the past 6-7 years (and is working his ass off on the hopes of getting into Vet School), I've had many more run-ins with German Shepherds than I have Pits. GSD's are much more headstrong, whereas pits tend to be extremely trainable and eager to please. Sure, that bid-ability allows people to use them for nefarious and horrific reasons, but the dozen or so that I've known (not counting mixes) have been fantastic, loyal kiddos.

There are breeds I generally don't much care working with (and I'm not even about to name them) but dogs are very individual, and the nurture side of living with them can be either beautiful or terrible.

Which is a long-winded way of saying, fuck it, Winston is a gorgeous pupper and I'm very happy that you all have decided to bring him in to your home. So yay for that!
