Creedence Clearwater Revival question [More:]Some bands have a smaller percentage of female fans than others. Consider the respective audiences at concerts by, say, Slayer and Coldplay.

Did CCR have fewer female fans than an average band of the time? I get that feeling... but I have no evidence one way or the other.
Creedence Clearwater Revival was an average band of the time.

Ah, it's the Bad Company question!

Also maybe known as the Rush question.

I have the same impression of CCR at the time. But I love CCR, grew up with them, always have, and I'm female. However, my dad is the big CCR fan in their house, while my mom not so much. THey're of the right generation. So, data point 1.

CCR was, in a way, the best damn 'average' band of the time, because so many truly below-average bands tried to be like them, but failed. (One of the side effects of 'making it look easy') I have very few songs from the 60s on my 'high rotation' (I don't do shuffle; old radio guy habits die hard) and CCR have a genuinely disproportionate number of contributions there: maybe the only two bands with more are the Beatles and the Who. (NOT Stones, NOT Beach Boys, NOT Tijuana Brass, maybe some Procol Harum). Yeah, "Whiter Shade of Pale" segues into "Lodi"... ON PURPOSE. Which reminds me: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO METARADIO?!?!?!?

Coldplay has hit singles; Slayer doesn't. CCR had hit singles.

Never liked CCR. But neither did my brother. I'm 46, he's 52.

Piggybacking: which artists, or which kinds of artists, have almost entirely female or almost entirely male fanbases?

I felt like CCR's fanbase was about equal. Proud Mary is the song I remember everyone singing at parties. I never really took note of them until "Willy and the Poor Boys" came out. Everything about that album, even the cover, was great.

But beer drinking, pot smoking party people, of both genders, I think, are the ones that made them famous.

As a proud member of the beer drinking, pot smoking party people, female persuasion, I like them muchly. Not really enough to have any of their stuff anymore - I think there's some vinyl in the basement - but I like them.

I was introduced to CCR by a woman. I was still a kid, untutored (except by vague radio exposure) to rock from 5-10 years earlier.
