Somebody's bucking for a ring. In my partner's seemingly bottomless quest to be the perfect woman, she has finally crossed the line and in fact transcended her female gender entirely. Yes, that's right, folks, she's decided she likes Rush.[More:] [shudders in horror/pleasure/worship]
All is well, scarabic.

I like Rush...

you can stop humping my leg now
posted by muddgirl 13 September | 22:55
I never thought I'd see the day.

In fact, before J I'd started evaluating women on the skill and wit with which they dismissed Rush. I'm completely disarmed.

"I always feel like I'm going on a journey with their music," she said, bouncing up and down in the passenger seat. "Where are we going this time, guys?"

She's just unreal...

What's the big deal? I like Rush. Have since I was 12 or so.
posted by Miko 13 September | 23:11
The big deal is, this one, you like. How long has it been?
posted by Miko 13 September | 23:12
Yeah, OK, but how does she feel about Mahogany Rush?
posted by bmarkey 13 September | 23:16
Not possible! Rush is a boys-only band.
posted by contessa 13 September | 23:16
What's the big deal?

What contessa said. Have you ever been to a show? Yeesh... You never saw such a sea of pasty white boys in your life.
posted by scarabic 13 September | 23:19
Actual conversation I once had:

Friend of mine: contessa, why do you like Dave Grohl so much?

contessa: because he's awesome and the best drummer on the planet.

Random whiteguy dating friend: no, the best drummer on the planet is -

contessa: don't say "Neil Peart from Rush."

Random whiteguy: - Neil Peart from Rush!

contessa: uh-huh.
posted by contessa 13 September | 23:30
well, I'm a pasty white girl....& unless you're against head-banging in general, what's not to like about Rush? At least they're intelligent.

Gene Krupa.

Back in the 90s, a friend asked me to escort/chaperone her 19-year-old roommate to a show Rush were playing in Oakland; Mary, the roommate, had just moved out from Wisconsin, and didn't really know her way around.

The show was kinda fun. Plus, local-boys Primus opened. More to the point, though, I'd say that Mary was indeed the only woman among the 45,000 folks in the room.

posted by bmarkey 13 September | 23:32
I always liked how Rush's lyrics were quite proselike. They didn't write to rhyme, they wrote little dissertations that happened to rhyme, conversationally.
posted by Miko 13 September | 23:33
Dave Grohl? Hm... apples and oranges comparison, I'd have to stop and say. And Dave Grohl does good work and I love him also but he's an infant by comparison. Perhaps in time he can inherit that mantle but he's got miles to go before he sleeps.

Much better fashion/hair/style sense, I will say that.

Okay you guys are making me feel like all women like Rush. I can only conclude that for every one of you who shows up here to do so, about 105 others glance at the thread and politely move on, having nothing nice to say :D
posted by scarabic 13 September | 23:35
...well, good on you to go with one of the gals who stopped to take notice. The problem with the 45,000 guys at the Rush concert is that they probably completely ignored the 50 women who were there, at least as potential partners, in their quest to chase women who were meanwhile probably at the Hall & Oates concert.
posted by Miko 13 September | 23:39
You are so right about that...

Goddamn... I recall going to an awful show of theirs at the Cow Palace, probably the Test for Echo tour or some other ill fated such... anyway as I was coming back from the bathroom I spotted a rather zaftig female with a vintage Caress of Steel t-shirt on. It had the sleeves cut off into a kind of tank-top. She was spinning and dancing in an off-to-the-side and on-her-own kind of way and looking pretty fine and I have to say I was completely intimidated by her total coolness. I think she was a little old for me regardless but at least I did pause to notice her. I hope she found herself a nice single-perfect-sphere kinda guy.
posted by scarabic 13 September | 23:45
And just what the hell is wrong with Hall & Oates?

/me is still watching out, lest he is chewed up
posted by Triode 13 September | 23:47
Oh, thank god you're all just talking about Rush. For the first 30 seconds or so as I was skimming, I was thinking you meant, uh, Limbaugh... and What!? You're all liking him?!
posted by DarkForest 13 September | 23:53

That and the fact that +/- 38,000 of them were too, um, chemically impaired to do much more than grin and let the light show wash over them.
posted by bmarkey 14 September | 00:01
Paging wendell...which stations in LA played them in the early 80's? A lot of kids in my teen group liked them, but the only thing I remember was the Bob and Doug Mackenzie skit with Geddy Lee on KLOS.
posted by brujita 14 September | 00:15
I like Rush, but Tony Allen could outplay Peart any day of the week! Actually, Allen could play for a whole week...

And the times, they are a changin' anyway. Last time I saw King Crimson, not only were several women there, but 4-5 black folks too!
posted by black8 14 September | 01:42
Miko, I was going to say Gene Krupa too. Fantastic drummer. And he was cool and hot at the same time.
posted by essexjan 14 September | 02:11
Um, Vinnie Coliauta.

If Frank Zappa says he's the best, that's enough for me.
posted by chuckdarwin 14 September | 02:32
My unit has also decided this. The offshoot is I have to at least pretend to brook her folky-country girlpop.

I liked Rush years ago when Geddy Lee had that awesomely hot long hair to go with his beautiful voice.
posted by JanetLand 14 September | 09:19
What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy.

They only come out at night. So, you can at least relax your guard during daylight.

Liking Rush is not a boy thing or a girl thing. It's a dork thing. Y'all are a bunch of dorky Rush-lovers.

posted by jrossi4r 14 September | 11:37
As a Canadian, and as a teenage prog geek, it was kind of a requirement to like Rush. Or at least some songs. The power chords that open Tom Sawyer, that kind of thing.

But my fandom was brought to a screeching halt around the time I was 17 or so, the day I saw "this album is dedicated to the genius of Ayn Rand" on a record sleeve. So it goes.

(The Trailer Park Boys episode which featured Alex Lifeson, however, is teh awesome, and was discussed on Mefi as being a true Canadian Moment.)
posted by jokeefe 14 September | 12:03
I am here to validate scarabic's original position; I am pasty white female and am not a Rush fan.

I like Micky Hart's drumming. That is all I know about drumming, except for the middle eastern kind.

I'm not sure I know who Rush is. I just looked them up on Wikipedia, and nothing rings a bell.

It might not have anything to do with age. I've never really followed the "cool" music of the day- I feel like living overseas for a few years as a child put me behind the curve. I'm usually listening to the oldies station or my collection of showtunes CDs. I will generally buy "pop" music at least 2-3 years after when it was actually cool.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 14 September | 13:43
In the world of classic-rock radio programmers, Rush is mostly known for 'Tom Sawyer.' I bet you've heard it at one time or another.
posted by box 14 September | 14:12
The other track you might have heard is Spirit of Radio. Also, I don't think Rush has every really been considered "cool". Then again: when you can play the bass like Geddy does, you don't have to be cool.

WRT best drummer: Keith Moon. No question. Very under-rated contender: Janet Weiss.
posted by bmarkey 14 September | 14:38
Huh. Nope, don't recognise either of those songs. I'm sure I've probably heard them; it's just not music I like.
posted by gaspode 14 September | 14:55
Yeah, me either.

Best drummer? Now that Max Roach is no longer in this world, my vote goes to Tony Allen.
posted by box 14 September | 15:08

posted by contessa 14 September | 23:09
Yeah, Jokeefe, I was about to bring up that Rush is very influenced by Ayn Rand.

But, you know, roll the bones!
