Cell phones and bees Could cell phones be the cause for the great bee decline? What can we do if it's true, have cell phone free bee preserves?
I'm no scientist, but the methodology of putting the cellphone with a beehive seemed to be somewhat unnatural occurrence. Unless beekeepers recharge their cellphones right at the hive like that. In practice, bees outside looking for pollen don't get that close to cellphones. It makes sense that a cellphone in a beehive would have some impact, but it seems more like the animal test where they give a frog 2000x times the normal amount and then report the frog dies.
I don't know why the bees are dying, obviously. It's one thing to read about the decline in the bee population, or to hear about it on the radio. It's totally another, though, if you spend any time walking around. If I walk five blocks across town and back, I will see at least two dead or dying bees on the sidewalk. That's not true for any other insect -- just bees.
After noticing the dead bees, that's when it struck me that there really is a problem. I hope they figure it out and reverse it, even if it means outfitting all the bees in the world with tiny little cell phone jammers.
