Is anyone else watching the World Cup opener? SA should totally be losing right about now.
Are we still harboring grudges from that 1995 rugby match?

Yes! And chatting with SpoFites in their IRC. Info here if you care to join.

GOOOAAAALLLLLLL!

Wow!

I would if I wasn't (supposed to be) working, ufez.

nah, rugby grudges stay in rugby, danf... Mexico *did* outplay them in the first half

Is there anywhere to watch online? My husband was in cable company service hell all yesterday and we still aren't getting ESPN for some reason. He cried a little.

Maybe the SpoFi peeps would know, rb?

Yeah, I'll check over there.

Guy has it on the teevee. All cats came running when he Goooooooooaled.

I am enjoying how handsome many of the players are. Especially that one Mexican player, who looks rather like a teenager.

It seems like the World Cup fans are breaking Twitter already. :(

How are you watching this? It tells me it's only available in the UK. Aren't you in Chicago?

I got the same message as desjardins. Darn!

Oh, sorry. I was chatting. Try ESPN.com I'll link to it when France/Uruguay start in a couple hours. I've got some errands to run and a lunch date with my pops right now, though.

Mexico got robbed of their first goal, they should've won that match outright.

Yes crush, that is really half the fun :)

We've got it on the teevee. That link was just the one suggested to me by a friend (who is in England, of course) and I hadn't checked it out!
posted by crush-onastick 11 June | 11:15
so how does that work if it's a tie? who advances into the next round or whatever?
posted by desjardins 11 June | 13:01
ESPN doesn't work either. Every link just goes to the top of the page. No wonder Americans don't watch this stuff, they sure don't make it easy.

desjardins - in the opening round (group play) all of the squads are separated into groups of 4. Every team plays the others in their grouop (round robin fashion). You get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 for a loss. At the end of the round robin, the two teams that have accumulated the most points in each group move on to the elimination round. So both Mexico and South Africa earned a point for the opening match.

And for ESPN, go here, enable pop-ups, and then select the France/Uruguay match. It hasn't started quite yet, and I think there may be a bit of delay on the streaming as compared to the teevee, but it should work.

ufez - that's what I did. Doesn't work. :(

Here's a list of streams for the France/Uruguay match. The ones marked "others" usually don't require special software. I'm on this one (heavily accented English, uses flash).

Just checked the sports page on my local paper's website and there are five articles about NFL football, which doesn't start for two more months, and zero about World Cup. If it were up to US media, you'd never know that we were even participating.

That spiffy goal was a nice consolation prize for the South Africa fans.

Mexico's performance could not have struck fear in the hearts of their future opponents.
