I have been tasked with planning a family BBQ. I have no idea what i am doing. help.[More:]
My main problem is coordinating what people should bring. We'll have 6 couples (including us) and a gaggle of small children. Everyone will be willing to bring something, which is good because we are not able to shell out for tons of food.

THIS NEEDS TO BE SIMPLE, REGULAR AMERICAN FOOD OR NO ONE WILL EAT IT. Hummus and baba ganoush is right out. There are no vegetarians or other restrictive diet people.

So far I have brats, hot dogs & hamburgers. Fruit salad. Beer. Soda ("Pop" for the rest of you.) What else do I ask people to bring?
Potato salad. It's a classic. Then there are slaw people and bean people. After that it gets all fancy schmancy and you're grilling gourmet pizzas and going all Bobby Flay with your grill madness.

Dessert? (I just finished up making these, which I'm taking to a cookout tonight for my father's birthday. They're an addition to the passive agressive pie.)

Pie is American. Skewers or meat and vegetable may or may not be American. Deep fried cajun turkey is American. Marinated chicken to be grilled might be American. Marshmallows seem American.

Easy baked beans recipe if you're interested:

One very large disposable aluminum pan (rectangular, full-size, deep)

2 giant cans Van kamp baked beans (the big cans on the bottom shelf)

one pound good bacon

one box dark brown sugar

Drain one can baked beans, do not drain second can. Pour beans in pan. Stir in box of brown sugar. Lay bacon on top. Bake one hour uncovered at 350 or 375 if you feel things are looking too soupy. People go crazy for these beans because they are extra sweet and bacon-y and plain and junk-foody. Picky people like them. I wrap mine up like a present in heavy-duty aluminum foil and transport without problems.

I have other very easy cake recipes that are made with mixes that people go wild for, too if you're interested.

Dessert: rice krispie treats, pop-sicles, chocolate covered vanilla bars on sticks.

Snacks: basic chips (Ruffles, etc.) w/onion dip, tortilla chips w/salsa.

Now I wanna go to a BBQ!

Cheapest, most "Amurikun" cookout recipe I know:
Velveeta
1 can of Rotell Tomatoes
Crockpot
Tortilla chips

Sounds foul, but it is AWESOME.

evilcupcakes, my grandma used to make that, and it. is. awesome. I will vouch for it. It's addictive. (It does have to be Rotel tomatoes, though...they have that special something).

Ooooh, evilcupcakes, I make that once (and only once) a year for an work-related party for Local Supercool Videostore: we all stay up til the wee hours scoring the annual trivia contest entries and eating what is now known as The Vile Dip. It's soooooo obviously evil, and sooooooo freaking good.

Honestly, I've only ever used salsa. Maybe this year I'll get the RoTel.

Some sort of dip for the chips? I went to a BBQ yesterday that had guacamole and hummus and onion dip. It was like HEAVEN (particularly the onion dip on a Ruffle potato chip).

If you can keep them nice and cold until the designated time, deviled eggs. (If you have leftovers, we'll eat 'em.)
