Ask MeCha: Why is PINE doubling my messages? [More:]

I'm not having any luck with a google search, but maybe one of you knows what's going on. Whenever I log in to my e-mail through PINE, my client at home (Thunderbird) downloads ALL my messages again as if they were new. Is this a problem with PINE (technically using Alpine), with Thunderbird, or what?
omg Eide you're a Pine user too?! I KNEW there was a good reason why I loved you!!

I've had that happen from time to time, but it's on my ISP's end and not Pine's. Hopefully they'll figure it out.

Also, sometimes, when I accidentally leave Thunderbird up on my home computer and then use Pine at work, something gets screwed up and I come home to find out that T-bird has downloaded all my new messages 5 or 6 times. Doesn't happen every single time, tho; I wonder if checking email from both at the precise, exact same time causes something to go ka-blooey.

I e-mailed my host to see what's up. Either I'm missing some setting in PINE or he's got something weird on his end.

This didn't never used to happen.

I also use Alpine! Are you using POP? You should use IMAP.

Looks like we're using POP, but isn't that up to my host? I don't think I can change that on my end.

I'd see if it happens using mutt instead of pine.

Also, some hosts allow both POP and IMAP and you can choose.

I was going to suggest that it's because POP, too. I would be astonished if they don't support IMAP. If they support both, then probably all you need to do is append :143 (the traditional IMAP port number) to the hostname in your .pinerc or .alpinerc file, or do the same thing through setup.

Feel free to interpolate words between 'because' and 'POP' so that the preceding forms an actual sentence.
