"Bigger Than Life" (1956) starring James Mason and Barbara Rush. Just watched this movie and it is EXCELLENT. [More:]Mason plays a schoolteacher who is proscribed cortisone for a life-threatening illness, and the psychotic side effects (caused when he starts overdosing) turn him into a monster. Their 1950s domestic home is filled with freaky shadows and incredibly tense silences. Mason's performance is one for the history books. Highly recommended.
OOoh. I like James Mason so I will check this out.

SPOILER:

Does anyone else who saw this think he'll go back to using at the end?

ANOTHER SPOILER:

brujita: YES. The doctor said he'd have to go back on the cortisone to stay alive. The ending is kind of a false hope- I mean, the guy already passed himself off as a doctor to get more than he was prescribed. No way will his wife be able to keep a lid on his addiction.

I think the end of the film was a brilliant example of how to deliver a "Hollywood ending" while implying that things probably won't go "happily ever after."
