Seriously? Maybe it's the same people it's always been, writing more year by year

I dislike Catcher in the Rye, but I love transistor radios.

In my son's school it was required reading. Requiring a book is so much more effective than banning!

My daughter just finished Doctor Dolittle, which is, frankly, racist. It's a bit painful to accept the reality that now that she's fully literate, her text intake is out of my control. She's going to read stuff that's offensive, racist, sexist, and even (gasp) poorly written.

My strategy is to make sure we talk about what might be racist or sexist in the books she reads (or movies she sees or what not), and also to try to balance outdated crap with great books that show a different point of view. Like we're listening to Bud, Not Buddy on tape right now (she totally loves it) and we just finished In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson which was also great.

I guess I'm hoping reading all these different books with their differing world views will help her critical thinking skills in the long run.

I really didn't like Catcher in the Rye though
