East 100th St in 1966 Photo essay from Slate. Now I live in this neighborhood. It's a little bit different.
Picture 07 has bunnies!

Um. I guess I deserve any accusations of NYC-centricity here. This is in New York City.

(plus, yes! I forgot to mention the bunnies as well!)

I was living out there when they started building the mosque and that was still considered the very edge of the no-go area. I went up there once for a look-see and it was condo renovations and coffeehouses on one side of the street mixed in with Spanish-language movie rentals and Colt .45 liquor retailers, and ... kinda scary on the other side. And I was a pretty gutsy, go-anywhere New Yorker after a year of exploring based mostly on dumb luck.

God, those photos are great. The aforementioned bunnies pic, the old man in bed with his dog under the bed, the little children pressed up against the window, the musicians (conga, timbales & guitar) in the kitchen... so many stunning images. Thanks, gaspode.
