What do you do when you see a reckless driver? [More:]So I was on the Interstate last night, and I was honestly doing the speed limit in the far right lane. Someone hit my back left corner as he swerved into the middle lane, passed another car, and sped off. I thought I got the plate number and was 50% sure of the car's make/model. So I called 911, who transferred me to the state police. They took the plate and sent a trooper to where I'd pulled off at the next exit to check any damage to my car (scratches only). The trooper was exceedingly nice, but he said that given the minimal damage, it wasn't worth reporting. Since I hadn't gotten the right plate number, they couldn't do anything. I guess I was picturing a pursuit, but now I feel foolish for having called.
How bad would you feel if the driver killed someone and you'd done nothing? I've reported bad drivers on several occasions. Once, I followed a drunk driver all the way to their home just to make sure a. they made it and b. no one got hurt on the way. That was in the days before cell phones, though.

Wow...for what it's worth, I also would have called. For sure. I can see that under the circumstances, they couldn't do much, but jeez, yeah, that's something worth mentioning!

Usually, when I see a wacko driver, I'll try my best to get well in front of them, unless they are crazy speeding. I always figure I'd rather be in front of them, rather than behind them when they DO cause an accident.

If it really wasn't worth the trooper's time, they probably wouldn't have sent him out -- in other words, that's their call, not yours. No need to feel foolish.

Twice I have called the police on reckless drivers. I think you did the right thing.

Do NOT feel foolish. You're not the professional, it isn't your place to determine whether action is warranted.

I'm actually surprised he did shrug it off like that. I know the local police ask for even partial plate-make-model and they can run database filters to look for local matches, but I suppose that's harder when you're looking at interstate travel.

For all my driving between Wisconsin and Illinois, and several hair-raising incidents, I never was struck at speed the way you were.

I bet you were driving on 94/294. I drive on the tollway every day and the speed limit is 55. I usually go 70 and it's like I'm standing still. People fly by me so fast and I almost never see anyone pulled over. I don't get why it is so lawless ... all the drivers know that it's never patrolled. I'm talking about the stretch roughly between the Wisconsin line and O'Hare. So, I am sympathetic.

Call it in, everytime.
You got scratched, the next person could get wiped off the road.

I call the cops. I saw a tractor trailer on the interstate with no rear lights at all at night [no brake lights, nothing] and I called the non-emergency number. I had a bus to catch so had to drive and call at the same time. I'm sure the Google 411 transcript is funny and/or scary depending on your perspective

"say the business, and the city and state"
"Bethel, Police"
"Rutland Police, I'll connect you" [Rutland is noplace near Bethel which is where I was]
"Start over. Royalton police" [another town near me]
"Rutland police, I'll connect you"
"Start over. Bethel State Troopers"
etc etc. for another five minutes.

I did eventually get ahold of the cops. The truck eventually noticed and pulled over.

You totally did the right thing desjardins.

Imagine if rather than a 2000 pound steel saftety cage, you'd had 20 pounds of steel truss and 2 wheels under you. We cyclists thank you for calling it in. Kylie Bruehler thanks you for calling it in.

PIT (note: I do not attempt this when I am on my motorcycle)

I bet you were driving on 94/294.

Yep, I-94 northbound just south of Half Day Rd. The funny part is that I drive 290 every day, which is MUCH crazier.

But starting next week I won't have to drive at all, since I'll be a housewife! (Until I find a job.)
