I was watching Leni Riefenstahl's film Olympia last night. And now I have a big crush on Jesse Owens. *sigh*

Well, that's a dang sight better than having a crush on fascist iconography!

And yeah, that Jesse was one handsome guy, for sure.

Isn't Leni Riefenstahl a Nazi propagandist or something?

She was kind of like Hitler's favorite filmmaker, yeah. But also a very talented filmmaker. I'm only about 1/3 of the way through Olympia, but other than Nazi salutes everywhere I really haven't seen much in the way of propaganda. Perhaps it's coming. I am enjoying seeing footage of athletes I have only read about.

The propaganda angle was that Germany was back in the swim as a world-class nation. Demonstrating the post-WWI recovery, etc. Usual international chest-pounding PR.

Something that nations with taste and good sense (e.g. Canada and the upcoming Winter Olympics) usually eschew in favor of hospitality.

I'll be on the lookout for that as I watch the rest, warbaby. So far, except for the Hitler shots and the salutes, it looks like Leni could have filmed it anywhere.
