Oooh, sparkly (swan) things! So now that I am going to buy all new jewelry, and I'm in "ooh, sparkly things!" mode, it occurred to me that it might be nice to have some swan jewelry.[More:]

As you can imagine, this is a subset of jewelry in which it behooves a shopper to be discriminating. As I browsed online, I remembered a friend's warning that I might not want to tell a lot of people that I named my house Swan's End, because most swan stuff is tacky and people would start giving me a lot of swan crap. She was quite right. I do have some swan stuff, but it's rare that I come across anything swan-related that's not horribly cheesy. I'm still trying to forget about a eighties-era pink ceramic swan I saw in Value Village.

So in swan jewelry shopping I soon came up with a list of rules. I soon ruled out swan earrings, because the effect of swan earrings seems to always be kitschy, even in the case of elegantly minimalist designs in silver. (Somehow one needs to be extra careful about whimsical hats and earrings, because they are so prone to look silly, perhaps because they're so close to one's brain.)

And I definitely didn't want any spoony looking swans that have their heads together, like say, this or this. This swan swims alone!

And beautiful as this cameo is, I am not sure that I'd want to get into any "Leda and the swan" themed stuff. I can't seem to see it without it evoking all that "ecstatic rape" garbage.

So what do I like? I like these vintage brooches. I like this pendant, though with it being black it probably isn't the best choice for me, someone who never wears anything black but track pants.

I can't help liking this necklace and earring set, though it's maybe a little chintzy and I'm not quite sure how it would go with my clothes.

I just love cameos, and so I like this ring, though I am not quite sure about the quality of the workmanship.

Probably the item I am most likely to buy is this silver swan ring, which is downright cool. It's funny — I am so drawn to that celtic aesthetic, and am half-Irish, and yet don't own anything in that vein. Not sure it's really worth $85 plus shipping though.

And the whole exercise of looking for swan jewelry has given me an idea for my mother's birthday present. She likes owls ("because they're wise and they have big eyes") and jewelry, and might like an owl brooch. But that's another thread for another time.;-)
I really like the black pendant in particular.

Fun shopping! Not as much fun as, um, not getting your jewellery stolen, but hey, you have to take the positives right?

Well, yeah. I might as well enjoy spending the insurance money and getting beautiful new items. I can't help but wonder if they're all going to be taken from me again, though.

I really like the first vintage brooch link and the celtic ring, there's something neat about how well swans work into woven designs.

Somewhere in my drawers I have a sterling silver swan pendant that I got as a gift when I was in HS but I never wear it because it looks too much like the simplified Gloria Vanderbilt logo used on that line of jeans.

I noticed your jewelry box Askme, maybe a small wall safe would be better? Or if that seems too much of a hassle, maybe cutting through the sheetrock between two studs, finishing the hollow and hiding behind a hinged mirror or framed image?

Every house that my grandfather built (he built a few. It was a hobby. He even managed to build one in secret where grandma didn't find out until it was almost done. Don't tell her about the seven books he wrote either) - there was a secret safe somewhere. In one of the buildings it was hidden in the fourth step from the top in the staircase. You just knock on the side of the step and it would pop up so that you could open it. I can't even remember where the other ones where. My mom carried on the tradition and had a safe-hole buried in the floor in the pantry, underneath the flooring and boxes of oatmeal. Her reasoning: "the thieves will never look in the womans domain". This was true, as we were burgled in that house and everything in the safe was fine, but her day-to-day jewelry, ie; the cheaper but more sentimental value stuff, that she kept in the bedroom and lots of decorative silver items like tea-sets were all nicked.

Since I'm working on renovating my house, I may just build in some secret cupboard somewhere. I like having my jewelry handy, though.... I will also probably be looking into getting a security system soonish.

I like the black pendant and the painted miniature. Was it done on ivory?

I have just too many questions:

Why the need to buy all-new jewelry?
What happened to the old jewelry?
Did it get stolen, or destroyed?
Was it maybe donated to a thrift or vintage store to help folks on the street or with cancer?

And how long will the entire catalog take to replace?
Is this some kind of vision quest?

Just too many questions. I apologize in advance for being nosy.

My former jewelry was stolen when my home was burgled three and half weeks ago, so I'm buying new items.

As for how long it will take, I think what I might do is buy one good piece and maybe one costume piece a month for the next year, and after that just buy a few pieces a year.

In terms of swan stuff, I am thinking that silver celtic swan ring I linked to and a vintage gold-tone swan brooch (which they have for under $10 on Etsy! awesome!) will satisfy my swan-themed jewelry needs.

One has to be careful not to overdo it with a theme. I don't want to get to be like Christine Taylor's unicorn-loving character in Dodgeball.
