25 January 2010

What have you changed your mind about lately? [More:] My palate seems to have changed and I've been having fun eating foods that I thought I hated. Mushrooms, black olives, licorice, even cilantro are yummy to me now. Then last night, I tried some lamb and WOW why have I not been eating lamb all these years? (Probably because I'd only had it cooked with mint jelly by my drunken grandmother who can't cook.)

Other things I have changed my mind on include John Edwards (dislike!), exercise (like!) and my VW (dislike!).

How about you?
For awhile, I really enjoyed flipping through bridal magazines, but I was looking at some at B&N on Saturday and it totally felt like a chore.

I used to think that changing the colors/appearance of webpages was a stupid waste of time but after reading MeTa I installed Stylish and the increased contrast style.

Mushrooms--I am still not a fan, but I don't auto-reject foods with mushrooms anymore.

I am prepared to change my mind about the new Battlestar Galactica, but I have not yet had a chance to watch it.

I always preferred mustard to mayo. Now I like mayo on most sandwiches rather than mustard.

Speed bumps. I used to think they were stupid tools of The Man used to appease hysterical Republican soccer moms with bouffant hairdos, but hey, it turns out that I really, really want The Man to install some on my street, pronto. I'm becoming establishment in my old age.

Online banking/bill paying. I used to be ultra paranoid about doing anything financial online. For some reason I always thought of it as a silly indulgence and something that only rich people would do. But I have recently discovered the joys of accessing my bank account online and being able to see exactly when checks come in and when deposits are posted. I've also begun to pay a few bills online, and it's so easy and comfortable I can't believe I resisted it for so long.

-MA Democrats (shortsighted, not super awesome)
-mayo on fries instead of ketchup
-how to spell "caribbean" (well, that is mostly looking it up and not guessing)
-high-heeled boots with peep toes (they still don't really make sense but now I like the way they look)
-The Good Wife (went from interesting show that I liked for the human aspect but now I think is too much like every other law show)

Robert Downey Jr. I used to hate him, now I think he's okay.

Fantasy fiction. Loved it... thought that I couldn't get tired of reading fantasy fiction. Now I'm tired of fantasy fiction.

Cauliflower. Used to hate it, now I love it.

I have changed my mind about Lady Gaga several times and will probably do it again.

Wearing a sweater today (it's an unseasonable 49°F). Now I'm freezing.

Breakfast. I used to be a huge fan. Now I feel like I need to eat it, but I can't stand the thought of what I used to eat (generally cereal or yogurt, or cereal with yogurt, and sometimes a hard-boiled egg), so I usually wander around in a slightly dissatisfied state until lunch. I don't like it.

Well, nothing; but just last night I learned a new word related to the process: metanoia.

mgl, speaking as a young street hooligan, I love speed bumps. If you hit them just right, you can get a totally sweet bounce.

I remember when they put speed bumps in at this campground my extended family would frequent in summers, hoping that it would discourage the dirtbike/ATV kids who kept zipping around the grounds. Except, well, they just made it more fun. So not only are they tools of The Man, but they're also almost entirely counterproductive.

DITTO!! I saw it was going to be 50 degrees out, so I dressed like it was going to be nice out and nice inside. It's HORRIBLE out and the heat is off in my office. FAIL.

Actually, you know what? Scratch that. I do.

Taking pride in things I own and do. Most specifically, this relates to my house. (And I'm sure going through these fucking building plans for work for houses that were up in the $30k range IN THE 1930S is not helping matters.)

I'm thinking about things I could remodel. But then I remember that I have no money whatsoever. Plus, I can't make a final decision about anything. I always thought that it was a bit snobbish to be concerned about having nice stuff, like a comfy couch or a TV that is bigger than my computer monitor.

Dance stuff and sunshine. I've decided that I do feel better when I'm more active and when I actually open my shades to get a wee bit of sunshine. (Unfortunately, by the time I get home from work, the sun is usually down. I want to eat more dinners on my patio, damnit!)

I have been way into salad lately. I used to be somewhat anti-salad.

I've decided I won't be changing my mind anymore. I used to feel differently about that.

I don't know why they call them speed bumps. I find, if anything, they slow me down.

I have pretty much lost my taste for Metallica and the metal bands that followed. The funny thing is if I add some synth chords of strings or reeds or some kind of melodic counterpoint to those same songs, they become quite listenable and some quite good to excellent.

The early Beatles....but this might just be because I'm not in the mood to listen to love songs.

jan, the trick is to accelerate right before you hit the bump. It lightens the front end of the vehicle and reduces the load your shock absorbers have to take.

Here's something that can change your mind about cauliflower (I think the pictures are self-explanatory).

(I checked, and and mushrooms, black olives, licorice, cilantro, and lamb are still five of my favorite things, so no change there.)

I used to think weddings were frivolous and a waste of money and resources; I only conceded to having A Wedding because it meant so much to my partner. But our families and friends made it the occasion for a dazzling outpouring of love, kindness, and creative contributions. Obviously, they feel this all the time, but the days and weeks leading up to the wedding gave them a focused time in which to express it. If I'd had my no-wedding way, we would have missed a lot of that.

Also, when I was younger, I was a staunch prescriptivist. Now I'm definitely a descriptivist.

I've changed my mind on... kind of on the nature of my opinions. As I've gotten older, my opinions on Important Things have gotten a lot more fluid (and I hope tolerant). I see more sides to things now, and as a consequence I no longer find it incomprehensible when people don't have a thought-out, defendable opinion on $IssueXYZ.

I changed my mind about trying to fit in with people I wasn't too excited around anyway. It's not high school anymore, after all.
