"Herb & Dorothy" (trailer) I watched this documentary over the weekend, about a highly unlikely pair of art collectors, and was completely charmed by it.
→[More:] Herb & Dorothy Vogel are a (now retired) postal clerk and librarian, respectively. Their whole marriage seems to have been founded on their love of art, and in the early 60's they started collecting it. They lived on Dorothy's salary while spending Herb's income on works of conceptual and minimalist art, eventually amassing a huge collection in their tiny New York apartment; then they donated the whole thing to the National Gallery in Washington, DC, because they wanted the collection to stay together, and to be a gift to the people of the United States.
They've started collecting again, though, and their apartment is again jammed with art. And cats.
Here's a cool review about the documentary from when it aired on PBS last year
(it's out on DVD now, which is how I saw it), and here's a website about the Vogel's
"50 x 50" project, by which they're now giving art to museums in all 50 states.
