"Preacher" songs My neighbour/friend, Todd Tyson, does a weekly radio program on a local station here in Vermont, and he asked me to help him think of some songs that involve preachers of some sort.

The show is primarily folk and blues though.

Any ideas? Especially you MeCha Radio DJs!
"Son of a Preacher Man," obviously. (Though I guess that's one removed from a preacher.)
Also, "Church" by Lyle Lovett.

The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" includes these lyrics:

Heard some talk about Papa doing some store front preaching.
Talking about saving souls and all the time leeching.
Dealing in dirt [some lyrics sites say "debt"] and stealing in the name of the Lord.

Oh, how could I forget my oldest crush, Kris Kristofferson, and The Pilgrim, Chapter 33?

"He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned..."

"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" although Papa wasn't a preacher so much as a huckster. Collide covered Son of a Preacher Man and I rather like it.

There are a lot of singing preachers. My favorites are probably the Anthology of American Folk Music, Goodbye Babylon kind of gospel-blues folks. Well, and some Jamaicans.

Ode to Billie Joe mentions a preacher:

"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today"
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way"
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
