3-Point Status Update [More:]

1. Yawn. I haven't opened my mail (except bunny holiday cards) since mid-September...

... not that I care. Most of it is interim bills from doctors, between Medicare's payment and my private disability medical insurance paying the balance. The rest is pretty much tax related, probably. If not, oh well, la-dee-dah. I don't owe anyone money except student loans and they're a joke for me now. Life is fine.

Can you tell I am liking this new anti-depressant?

2. I had an interesting dream experience yesterday morning. It was just a common, ordinary dream when BAM!, an unrelated explosion flashed in my eyes and cracked in my ears, and I flung myself upright in bed. My son was already up and he said that no, nothing had made any loud noises.

3. Sookie, our cat, has pretty much adopted me as her favorite.
1. I've had bad soreness in my chest for a week, so I called in and went to the ER. I have bruised ribs. I get a couple days off and some Vicodin. Cool.

2. Still drinking that Throwback Mountain Dew. Good Stuff That.

3. Watched some AfterM*A*S*H DVD's the other day. That show was OK.

1. Made baked potatoes and broccoli cheese soup for dinner. I've been on a big creamy soup kick lately.
2. I bought some stamps online this week- and the post office held them for signature. Still makes me mad- if I wanted to buy stamps at the post office, I would've just gone there in the first place. Oh well. Thanks to Stynx for picking them up today!
3. Still have to get to the gym tonight. Booooo. It was so crowded Tuesday night, it's not fun. Go away, resolution people!

1. I saw Up In The Air tonight. I enjoyed it very much. Clooney is hot as hell and a fine actor.

2. Caribbean food after the film.

3. Urgent optician appointment tomorrow - my left eye is very irritated from my contact lens, and it feels like the same spot where I irritated the cornea quite badly a few years ago wearing gp lenses. Damn.

1. Today a 4th grader demonstrated the hilarious art of towel-folding. My favorite was the butterfly but the bird head was also quite good.

2. It's been pouring all day and my stupid neighbors' friends took all the spots on the street and I had to park four houses down! Grr.

3. NBC comedies on tonight, yay! Only two more nights of Conan, boo.

Caribbean food after the film. Mmm, fried plaintains... Why don't we fry bananas more in the US? We fry everything else for god's sake.

1. I just adore Tyler and Catelynn from Teen Mom on MTV. They are the best thing MTV's had on in years, really amazing kids.

2. Struggling with a diet. Every day I feel like I must have lost weight... But the scale says no. So I cut out yet more food.

3. Starting to really seriously plan to have a baby on my own, but I don't know how the heck I am going to afford child care. I hope my mom wants to babysit a few days a week...

1. I have officially booked and paid for my flights to England in May! OMG!
2. My sis and her hubby are visiting from England at the moment, which is actually nice. We've been getting along really well, which is a great relief.
3. Had a big family reunion last week, and have seen all of my relations in the last month or so. This is unusual. People flew from all over to be here for it. Very awesome to see them all.

3a. I've already given up on the gym for the evening.

1. Just got back from the gym. Within two minutes of getting on the elliptical, my heart rate is up to around 150 or so, and that's not pushing things all too much.

2. Once, just once, (ok, maybe more than once), I would like a little guidance from above, from God, a psychic, an outside source, anyone who's up there in charge of my life.

3. I went to an RV show last weekend. Don't know why, as I won't have money to take any trips for at least a few years, but it's nice to dream sometimes.

This made my head explode. It is the most egregious example of DOING IT WRONG since the Spruce Goose. Or, or.... I dunno. I can't even think of anything as wrong as that. I'm speechless.

1. I'd like an adult beverage.
2. I accomplished absolutely nothing today, while elizard was a tornado of productive activity.
3. Dark Avengers #13 was either the best or the worst comic book I've read in some time. I'm not sure which. It's a retconning of a retcon setting up a retcon. And the Sentry is explicitly described as nothing less than God incarnate, which is stupid, but somehow appealingly audacious.

1. Shitty (and unexpected) evaluation from my manager. Not happy about that. I was warned by others that he's been known to pull shit like that, I should have been prepared. Do all jobs suck?

2. Just got back from the Gym and can't really move. 20 minutes of lifting and then 2.75 miles on the elliptical. Ouch. Helps work out some of my work-related GRAR though.

3. My son's going to be the stage manager for his college's musical production this spring, so that's pretty cool.

2. Last winter, a cold went to pneumonia or asthma. . .not fun.
3. Finally got a neti pot, in order to avoid #2.
3a. I'd like to buy the world a neti pot. . the feeling is SO good. . .the cold comes back in an hour but for an hour, it's like being well all of a sudden.

1. Wrote an email to my ex last night, saying that I was still hurting from his actions. I need some closure so I was asking for some joint counselling when we are in the same city.

2. Also received a note from a sometime nemesis back home that reminded me I should give people the benefit of the doubt and not jump to conclusions. It's easy to speculate when I am several time zones and hundreds of kilometers away.

3. I think I am feeling this way about my ex because I am far from home, away from friends, and distractions.

3A. I am sending some mefi postcards today. Tell me if you want a postcard but if would be over the next few months. I still have the mecha holiday list.

1. the power is back on at our house after being off since Tuesday for construction. It being well below the freezing mark we ran our furnace on an extension cord from the neighbours. So now the walls and roof are up on the addition on our house. YAY!

2. The kids are finally in bed, complaining to be back in their real beds instead of camping in the upstairs hide a bed with candles and playing gameboy in the dark.

3. I bought the Ralph Lauren Spinnaker blue paint for the family room reno (not in the new part of the house). Hopefully it will magically adhere itself to the walls tomorrow.

1. Escalating roommate dissatisfaction meant that I went hunting for a new place, only to have my parents suggest that I house-sit/rent theirs while they spend the spring in Europe. While for all logical reasons this is the best decision, my inner adult is cringing at moving back "home", even though it hasn't been my home for years and the part that makes it so will be basking in the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany 95% of the time that I'm there.
2. I need to stop moving in January, as everything takes at least twice as long due to snowy streets and painful joints. Almost done, though.
3. I have internet access at home (meaning I can post things, rather than just read) and a working computer again. Sorry.

2. I know that the above will mean nothing to most/all of you.

3. Because I played bridge this afternoon, I am working right now.

1. I have a cold, too. I've had an annoying cough for two weeks.

2. My first grader told me yesterday that his teacher believes Martin Luther King Jr. is still alive. I don't even want to think about investigating this. I suppose the lesson is, some people are loony, get used to it. And don't believe everything your teacher says.

3. I did nothing today except go to work for a few hours. I tried to take a nap this afternoon but my husband and kids were power sanding, talking loudly, stomping, and sawing in the garage. I couldn't sleep. I sat on the couch and at the table and heated up leftovers for dinner and went to a Cub Scout meeting and now I want to watch a movie or read something interesting but I am too tired and must go to sleep.

1. Yesterday night into today have been pretty bitchin'. My dance class was fucking amazing (and I even got fantastic compliments from the instructor) and I had a good productive day at work even though it was my short day. I came home and put up signs and did my laundry and have just spent 4 hours doing school things (courtesy of LeechBlock).

2. My dizziness seems to be clearing, which is nice because I like being able to move around without clutching the walls or feeling like I might puke. I guess this means that whatever cold has been kicking my ass this week must be on the way out. (My family has the 3 or 5 day cold. 1 or 2 days of semi-shittiness, but still functioning, one day of absolute death plz kill me now, and then another 1-2 days of semi shit. Tuesday was my death day.) I'm pleased because once it passes, I can take my sleeping pills again and actually sleep through the night without waking up at every little bump and twitch of the HVAC.

3. After spending an extended day with my family over the weekend (including a big chunk of my extended family that I haven't seen in a very long time) and all this dance goodness and working on my school stuff--I've been having all sorts of positive realizations. It's a bit frightening at times because a lot of these things are upheavals to how I've been viewing myself and the world, but they're good things. Most recently, I was typing up comments for my class discussion board and I was rereading them to make sure they made sense for the thread and I thought to myself 'holy shit I am smart!' which is a 180 from my usual mental stance.

1. The cat and I are spread out on the spare mattress in the front room, catching the cool air from the AC. She's taking up more of the bed.

2. I'm panicking about my friends party - I've got my Bollywood costume sorted, but I don't have a gift. I'm a bad friend.

3. The casual job I applied for is mine if I can just find one more reference. Problem is, everyone has either quit, been fired or restructured, or the company has gone bust. Being self-employed has some issues - I can't give myself a reference, apparently.

danf: the power of the neti pot is huge! An Indian friend recommended to my poor husband to include a miniscule pinch of turmeric to the mix. Apart from giving my husband awesome yellow boogers, it seems to do interesting things to mucus. He says it helps a bit.

Ninazer0 - yeah, turmeric is traditionally used as an antiseptic/antibacterial for like cuts and stuff.

1. Finally saw a sleep doctor today. Maybe my sleeping problems are on their way out.

2. I'm loving this new Piccadilly notebook I bought at Borders a while ago for $5. It's very similar to a Moleskine, but so much cheaper.

3. I'm stressed out about getting all of my work done.

1. It is now Friday, which means PIZZA AND WINE! (We aren't drinking during the week anymore, so Fridays are even more welcome than they were previously.) The pizza will be topped with garlic-satueed mushrooms and blue cheese. Wine will be of the cheap red variety.

2. Anyone want to play Words With Friends on their iPod? I just got an iPod touch (totally random surprise gift from ex-step dad!) and although I haven't been listening to music on it, I'm a fool for this Scrabble-esque game. (You'll probably beat me.)

3. I have had a headache for about two weeks now. I think it's a combination of gallbladder woes, computer work, and stress. I would KILL for a soak in a deep tub, but we have only a shower. Oh well. Bring on the wine.

1. STILL NOT SMOKING. Still. Every day. Not smoking.

2. Half-assed trying to diet. Really, really need to diet. I needed to before I quit smoking, but now... well, my "fat pants" are getting tight. whah.

3. Money sucks so very bad right now, and Greece sucks so much right now. Huge, huge suckage. Like The Liposuction of the Asses of The Gods suckage. Srsly.

1. Woke up with eyes nearly swollen shut, thanks to riotous weeping right before bed caused by finishing Where the Red Fern Grows.

2. I have a cold. It's annoying and seems to be moving down into my chest a little.

3. I've dropped $2400 to fix my car over the past couple of months. Ugh.

I've had one stressful situation after another since about November, it seems. Shingles, furnace going out for three weeks (and still not being totally fixed, I fear), travel, car repairs, minor medical procedure that had small complications leading to MAJOR pain, then this cold. Work is either boring or overly scheduled, etc. But nonetheless, my life is really at its best almost ever, for personal reasons. Things seem to be falling into place, which makes me happy. I have a house finally, and someone to share my life with, and good friends. My job is pretty stable, though it doesn't pay well (nonprofit), and we're seeing a spate of growth in the organization. So, tumultuous and wonderful times all at once.

And YAY TAZ! Keep up the good work...

echo! YAY TAZ!

1. Been a pretty good two weeks. The kids get out of bed more or less on time, and there's minimal fussing about getting dressed and eating breakfast and combing hair. I'm even getting up more or less on time and have blessed quiet time to myself before the chaos starts.

2. I don't have a neti pot, per se, but a bottle that squirts saline up the nose, and I agree, it's great stuff.

3. Home computer died. :( I did manage to bring the hard drive to work and save my files though. It lasted seven years, so that's something.

1. Woke up with back spasms, the kind that should keep me in bed with an ice pack. But I have plans, and I'm not breaking them: I am stronger than the pain. I'll just keep telling myself that.

2. Started writing a new piece last night. I can't tell if it's any good yet, but I'm excited, which is a delightful change.

3. I have successfully cut down my caffeine intake to normal human levels: one big triple cappuccino in the morning. (That's down from a triple/quadruple in the morning and another in the evening, for a total of 6 to 8 shots daily.) It's time for that cappuccino right now, in fact!

Yay, taz!

LoriFLA, is there any teeny chance that the teacher meant "alive in spirit" or "alive in the hearts of civil rights activists" or any other not-loony thing?

Or was maybe confusing him with somebody else who is alive (which is still awful but somehow understandable)? I don't want to think that there's a teacher out there telling students that MLK Jr. is part of some conspiracy, biding his time with Tupac and Elvis in some cave somewhere.

Go Taz Go! And don't worry about dieting yet, just add more veg. One major change at a time...

1. My plan to have this be the day that I don't scratch at my face is already thrown.

2. Secret interviews for another company have been going well but I can't tell bpeopel but I have such a big mouth and it's hard to keep it in!

3. I am going to miss Conan

4. Training someone at work is tiring, which I knew, especially when I secretly want to do the best job ever since I might be leaving him and the job soon-ish maybe.

5. Everyone has already seen Avatar but I think one of my friends is going to take pity on me and see it again with me.

6. I need to pee but I am too lazy to get up and the space heater on my ankles feels good.

We questioned him. I believe he is not confused. Monday was the MLK holiday. Tuesday was a teacher duty day. Wednesday when they returned to school they were taught more about MLK Jr. The teacher is a loon. She is from the south and had a pet alligator from ages 15 to 19. (Kid told me this. She tells stories all day. My eldest son had her as well and she loved to tell stories about her ex-husband,Larry. She and Larry are divorced and Larry smokes too much and had a heart attack...) So, I questioned him and he said, "My teacher believes that Martin Luther King Jr. is still alive. Some people believe that. He would be 81 today." I don't know. Maybe he is confused and I'm jumping to conclusions. She is nice but crazy so I'm probably prejudging.

Husband and I assured him that he was dead, unfortunately.
posted by LoriFLA 22 January | 13:41
Ack. But it's good for kids to learn that teachers, like everyone else, can have some pretty loony ideas and that just because they are in authority does not necessarily make them unimpeachable sources of information.

A niece's one-time teacher believed firmly that whales were fish, not mammals. She would not accept dissent on this matter and would shout down students who countered her belief with mention of whales' mammalian traits. However, the fish/mammal thing seems a lot less loaded than the belief that a great civil rights leader has (presumably) faked his death.

posted by Miko 22 January | 16:16
Yeah, I do trust her. She is a good teacher. I hope I am getting it wrong.

Also, I didn't mean to imply that she is a loon because she is from the south, or had a pet alligator, or an ex-husband. I was trying to paint a picture. :-) My husband and I were talking to her at length one afternoon about politics and she has some pretty crazy ideas. I still like her, though.
posted by LoriFLA 22 January | 16:19
Ah, in that case, you're modeling a conceptually tricky but important lesson for your kids: that someone in authority may have offbeat ideas that you disagree with, but that you can still respect and be fond of that person.
