Is there such a thing as single-trip auto insurance for a borrowed (but not rented) car?[More:]

We have a trip planned this weekend, but the GF's car broke down last night. We can borrow a car from a friend of mine, but there are some catches.

1) If anything happens, I don't want the friend to have to file a claim on her insurance. I'd rather we be responsible for it.
2) The GF has car insurance, but I, not having a car, do not. I will be the primary -- and probably only -- driver.

So can we buy basic coverage for a car that's not ours that will cover both of us for this weekend only, either through the GF's insurance company or through AAA or something?

We were thinking that if such a thing exists, it might be cheaper than renting.
Have gf call her insurance agent and ask. When I rent, I usually decline all coverage except one kind (can't remember what type but it's the one where rental company loses revenue because of me). So I cannot imagine why the same wouldn't apply in this case (except that you are not paying your friend to borrow the car).

Definitely call the insurance company.

PS: I hope you know about the weather pattern that is brewing over the pacific right now. We (all of CA) are going to get slammed with 4+ storms over the next two weeks and all of this starts Sunday night.

The forecast for Tahoe area (from a colleague) is:

"Above 3000-4000 feet, precipitation will be all snow, and since temperatures will be unusually cold for a precipitation event of this magnitude, a truly prodigious amount of snowfall is likely to occur in the mountains, possibly measured in the tens of feet in the Sierra after it's all said and done. But there's a big and rather threatening caveat to that (discussed below). Individual storm events are going to be hard to time for at least few more days, since this jet is just about as powerful as they come (on this planet, anyway)."

So if you stay in Tahoe past Sunday night, I would urge you to be prepared for gnarly weather related delays. Echo summit may be closed.

Yep, we know. The forecasts I've seen aren't that grave, and it sounds like we might be able to slip out between storms. That's what we're hoping, anyway.

(Oh, and we're going to Reno, not Tahoe, so we'll be on 80.)

Same thing. You will still go over Echo and past Truckee.

I have personal coverage though I don't own a car. (I gave mine to my son's girlfriend rather than write it into the will.) I am covered through Progressive for everything including weather damage for any car I borrow or loan for $150 per six months.
