Family pet or dinner?

Heh heh. I spent the majority of my childhood in the south, and have heard tales of the visiting Yankee coming across a possum in the dark and exclaiming over what an ugly cat it was.

Oh, Roadkill, you were the bestest pet ever.

Well this Yankee knows what a possum is. We actually once had one come sauntering into our house when we lived in the city.

We had possums in Jersey when I grew up, I never thought of them as a southern thing.

That dude looks EXACTLY like someone who would find it normal to carry a possum around in his field coat all day.

I heard him laugh once't and it came out all HRAWHWHAHAWHWHRAWHWRAWHWAAHARHAAAAAAAHRAW!

At least I thought that was him laughing. I took his possum.

The range of the wild opossum is pretty much the entire eastern US plus some of the prairie and west coast.

The range of the pet possum, however, is much more limited.

I had a possum that got into my garbage can, ate a bunch of outdated cookies, the was too full to get back out. I had to gently tip the can over, so the wellfed critter could waddle out. This was in coastal Jersey.

I saw an honest-to-goodness 'possum here in Queens, NY a few years ago. Yeah, right here in NYC.

I was walking through Sunnyside when I saw a little furry thing in someone's front yard.

"Damn, that cat's moving kind of funny . . . bald tail too . . . HOLY SHIT, IT'S A POSSUM!"

We have possums living in our neighborhoods here in central Kansas. For me, they fall into the "so ugly they're cute" category. And possum babies are adorable!

Am I the only person who things the man on the right looks remarkably like William Shatner?

I saw a possum in SoCal (Thousand Oaks, Ventura County).

I spent a fair amount of yesterday morning trying to chase an opossum out of our yard. Which mostly involved alternating between yelling and clapping making harsh noises while chasing the thing, and stopping abruptly and saying, "Awww, look at its little thumbs!"
