Also good, and along the same lines, are french fries with ranch dressing, crumbled bacon, and provolone cheese (and you know I know my cheese fries). They have them at a sandwich place nearby and call them Western Ranch Fries.

Heh, seconding Essexjan. Americans totally win at inventing comfort foods, and for that I must never live there.

I think Ranch dressing was actually invented by the Russians in the 50's as a long term deterrent to US health.

Sad but true. I'm on a diet program right now, and I actually have fantasies about buffalo wings, which were originally invented by a bar in Buffalo, NY as a cheap giveaway food that would also induce bar patrons to drink more (because of the hot sauce). Although the original accompaniment to buffalo wings was bleu cheese dressing, the preferred condiment now is--you guessed it--ranch.

Bleu cheese is in my view a much better Buffalo wing accompaniment.

(Also, I want to eat cheese fries from amro's sandwich place.)
