It's far too late. They have already released far too much pap and cheese into the environment and are collapsing under the weight of historic and systemic crappiness. The tipping point was passed in the early 90s - even if U2 were to immediately become completely relevant, they are already fucked.

That was a great link! Some of the comments were great too. My favorite:
