A playable, online version of the original "Quake." [More:]Hit ESC for the menu. You can look under "Options/Customize Controls" to figure out the controls.

This brings back SO many memories.
Wow, for me too. Used to play this with my then-boyfriend about 10 years ago.

I never played the first Quake, but played a lot of Quake 2, both in pvp and regular mode. I kicked ass.

Aw man. In grad school I worked the night shift at NZ poison control. I played a lot of quake while waiting to deal with the calls.

I loved Doom when that came out and was more than a little obsessed by it

When Quake came out it just didn't do it for me. I found the addition of being able to look up and down really annoying - like making Space Invaders three dimensional it added a sliver of realism but made it less playable.

Now I've played Quake on this link I have no idea what I was complaining about, it seems almost indistinguishable from Doom to me now.

Likewise. Also loved Doom II and Duke Nukem. Quake was sort of the pinnacle for me, because I loved the grim starkness of it. I never finished Quake II, and that was it for me and first-person shooters.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight was my favorite '90s FPS, my son and I used to play the multi-player levels for hours when he was young. I was probably a bad parent for letting an 8 year old play a Rated:Teen game but he seems to have survived.

Quake is still on my machine.

Well, it's back on my machine as of a couple hours ago. The online version didn't do it for me so I downloaded a copy and have been playing this afternoon. Mindless fun. (and I mean that in a good way)

BP - I finished Q2 a number of times, but same as you, it was my last FPS. Q3 was such a disappointment and I never picked up Q4.

I liked the original Quake. I remember getting the demo of it on a CD at some computer store for like a buck. I tried it, and was hooked. I liked the darkness of it, and hey, music by Trent Reznor. Quake II didn't do it for me either, just lacked a certain je ne sais quois.

Quake really did have that certain something. I'm glad to hear that other people's interest in FPSes end too. I went on to Rainbow Six and loved it. But I never got into Halo. It was something about the game engine. I felt a little left out as the years went on and Halo got big.
