DOA by Bloodrock (1972). Probably the most gruesome song to ever hit the American Top 40.
I'm surprised I'd never heard this, or even heard of it, before.

Sounds kind of like a non-punk version of the Damned, maybe.

PS- good to see ya, bud!

Hey, BoPo. The Damned comparison is interesting, but sort of left field. These guys are usually associated with the 'hard-psyche' stuff like Iron Butterfly. Supposedly, the song is about a plane crash that killed half a college football team.

I figured it wasn't a very apt comparison, since I only had time to kind of scroll through the song quickly. Will give it a more in-depth listen later.

What are some other candidates for most-gruesome-song-to-ever-hit-the-American-Top-40?

I can think of a few crash songs ('Leader of the Pack,' 'Dead Man's Curve' 'Tell Laura I Love Her,' the Everly Brothers' 'Ebony Eyes' (not to be confused with the Stevie Wonder one)), but I don't think any of 'em are actually gory, y'know?

Are there any Halloween novelty songs with gruesome lyrics?

Bloodrock 2, 3, and USA are all good albums, but quite similar. The first and Live are for completists. Skip Passages altogether--new personnel, average vocals and a prog direction that doesn't work.
