Rhode Island governor "protects marriage" by vetoing bill that would have allowed gay couples to make funeral arrangements for each other. [More:]

This is the kind of shit that keeps me awake nights. My partner and I have wills, power of attorney, etc etc, but thanks to the good people of Georgia and their anti-gay amendment, all of that could be ignored if a judge found our arrangements to be too close to "a benefit resembling marriage." The story of the guy in this article trying to have his partner cremated (about 13 paragraphs down) is my worst nightmare.
heartless. :(

argh. I had an incoherent comment up here, but I can't really articulate it any better than GRAH.

Goddamn it. What the fuck is wrong with people? Fuck!

Jerk.
Hopefully this will be put to the people on a ballot and they will vote for it. If he is on record saying he wants the people to decide this, then he better not veto it when they do.

I'm from New England too. We always learned that Rhode Island was created by folks hoping for a more tolerant life then the rest of us poor zealots.

What happened to that? How did that guy get in office?

Thanks for posting this, BP, I haven't been keeping up on my current events.

Checked a local blog I usually read, saw this.

What an ass.

See, this is what I can't get past: I can see (not understand, not condone) how people can be anti-gay marriage, right? But this is miles, miles beyond that. It's just mean, plain and simple. Mean.

Grar, indeed. Fuckers.

But this is miles, miles beyond that.

This is why you can't believe the haters who say they only care about tradition or OMG THE CHILDREN or whatever. Because they never, ever stop. Once they've hurt you in one way, they'll always look for the next step so they can hurt you again.

Exactly, BP. Fuckers.

If you want some hope, look at the trend over time state by state, and by age cohort. RI is one of several states that have already passed the 50% mark overall (however that is not weighted for the voting electorate).

What part of "I would like my partner to make the following arrangements after my death" is not a decision by "the people of the state of Rhode Island", the only people who should be permitted to weigh in? Shameless pig.

I just do not understand how a governor can veto a bill that passed, 63 to 1, that allows people to bury their loved ones. It is completely, mind-bogglingly ridiculous.

The more I think about this the sicker it seems.
