Breakfast Of Champions Somebody told me once it's the most important meal of the day. I had a little extra time this morning, so I made an omelet with fake crabmeat, herbed feta, roasted garlic and red and green onions. Did you have breakfast today? What'd you have?
I had toast with peanut butter and marmalade. It was excellent.

I only ever have coffee for breakfast. I know, I know.

But that does sound really good, box.

A fistful of vitamins, a banana, and two satsumas. I've got a funeral this morning at the Second Baptist Church and the ladies there are infamous for their hospitality and biscuits. I will not starve today.

I'll probably have some cereal with soy milk. Unless I eat the leftover Ethiopian...

I had a banana. WITH MY COFFEE.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna make buttermilk biscuits. And maybe guy will make some eggs. but there will be COFFEE.

I had a chunk of coconut lime bundt cake I made last night and some coffee. Shortly here I'll be having a fried egg, though, as I have some egg-frying techniques to try out from my askme yesterday.

Two cups of coffee to be followed by a Diet Coke.

Glad I'm not the only one who makes cake and then finds myself eyeing it with longing in the early morning. I always think of the BIll Cosby routine from the 70s about dad taking care of the kids and giving them chocolate cake for breakfast: "Why not? It's got eggs....got milk....'Dad is great! Give us chocolate cake!' "

But this morning there is no cake. I ate toast w/butter and jam from my breadmachine bread - been making one called "Special Winter Bread" which contains whole wheat, cornmeal, and molasses, and it's really delicious. Plus I tell myself the molasses is giving me a healthy hit of iron (along with all that sugar).

I do have eggs but just don't feel like making an omelette this morning. Usually I either eat toast with peanut butter or jam or both, or an egg sandwich with 1 egg, and maybe an omelette on weekends.

I only have coffee too. Are you guys actually hungry, or do you eat because you should? I just can't make myself eat unless I'm hungry, and when I wake up at 8, I don't get hungry until 2 or so.

I also notice that eating breakfast turns on the hungries, and then I'm ready to kill until lunch time. Like, *all* I can think about is food.

I had cereal and cold tea. Now it's breaktime and I'm having an apple. I'm always starving when I wake up.
posted by JanetLand 13 November | 10:06
I'm the same way, ico, but I drink non-caffeine-y beverages.

I did have a little breakfast this morning, though: half a sausage leftover from dinner last night and a bit of mashed potato.
posted by Specklet 13 November | 10:08
I'm like you iconomy-during the work week I just have tea for "breakfast" then I toss a Luna bar and an apple into my bag.

On the weekends, I put more effort into breakfast-a nice omelet, usually...around noon or so.
posted by miss-lapin 13 November | 10:14
I had cereal and drugs. I'm getting ready to have some fruit and more drugs.

I used to never eat breakfast, just drink coffee. I started eating breakfast because I should (really, as part of a weight loss plan that emphasized how important it is). BUt within a very short time I began waking up hungry for breakfast, and now I'm absolutely ravenous in the morning if I don't get something to eat within an hour or so of waking up.

Yes, it does make you hungry in the morning, because you've got the furnace running. I've handled that in two ways: a midmorning snack (banana or apple is great for this) followed by a late (2 PMish) lunch, or just eating lunch at noon like a lot of people do.

A breakfast containing both protein and fiber seems to help stave off extra hunger in the morning. When I just eat toast or cereal, it's clear that's not enough. The body burns through the carbs so fast in the morning on an empty stomach.

In general, I feel a lot better as a breakfast eater. My energy level stays a lot more stable throughout the day. I actually felt the best in life when I went on the "six mini-meals" plan and had small meals and substantial snacks about every 3 hours all day, but I have strayed from that in the chaos of this past year.
posted by Miko 13 November | 10:38
What Miko said, pretty much. When I started eating breakfast regularly, it was because I should (morning protein), but now, I've grown accustomed to it, and I'm usually hungry in the mornings.

I went to bed hungry last night but weirdly didn't wake up hungry this morning. I usually don't get hungry til 2 hrs after I wake up. Today I had vanilla yoghurt with homemade granola and then a very ripe comice pear.

I had my usual: glass of OJ, glass of milk, bowl of Fiber One & dried cranberries.

I had been making a breakfast taco every morning, but I got tired of that. So now I've mixed up a batch of quick-cook oats, some brown sugar, pinch of salt, and some cardamom, and I keep it in a ziploc bag. Put some of that in a bowl, nuke it for 90 seconds, and yum, oatmeal! I also have a bag of cashews and raisins that I add after it's cooked, and that totally makes it more yummy.

This is my first oatmeal week, and I'm really enjoying it. It serves two purposes: 1) It stops my stomach from growling long about 9 a.m. and carries me through to lunch. And 2) it absolutely gives me something to look forward to after getting to work.

Huh. I wonder if I should try that, Miko. I felt my best in life while being raw. And that involved eating little meals all day long. I felt incredible. So much energy, a better outlook on life. I got away from it because it was so hard to eat socially or easily and it got to the point where I was just so sick of looking at fruit, there being so many times where there was no other option. But yes, there is definitely something to be said for "grazing" throughout the day instead of eating big meals, at least for some of us.

Coffee and a bowl of shredded wheat at home and then more coffee and a scone from the Crazy Mocha across the plaza from my office.

Usually when I come to visit people, I make 'em breakfast in the mornings. Trying to be a good guest and stuff, you know. And it gives me an excuse to make 'em take me to the grocery store, which sounds much better than making them take me to the liquor store.

One side, jam.

The other, salmon cream cheese with chopped fresh scallions.

The most popular thing I've made for breakfast would have to be Scotch eggs (the whole, hardboiled egg inside a ball of sausage) and OMG country fried tomatoes, which are still quite orgasmic. I make those two every Christmas morning, along with some kind of biscuits, my hot pepper jelly, and some kind of quiche. People like me very much on Christmas morning.

Fav quickie breakfast - toasted bagel slathered with mushed room temp avocado, topped with sliced tomato with salt and pepper on it. Nom nom.

You could get away with it if you offer to have breakfast include mimosas or bloody marys...

country fried tomatoes,

OMG indeed. I'm glad I got through the summer without seeing that recipe, because I'd be even plumper than I am right now. Oooh doggie. Is it August yet?

You're right, but I really relish the opportunity to sample the seasonal local craft beers and crazy triple-IPAs and imperial stouts and whatnot. It's great when folks buy something for me, but I still like to go shopping myself.

Ha, you'd be disappointed when you got to the grocery store in NJ - no alcohol sold there.
posted by amro 13 November | 15:13
Same in CT! You have to go to the "Packy."
posted by Miko 13 November | 15:54
And PA has that weird beer 'distributor' system, and here in AR the next county over is dry except for 'private clubs.' The nation's retail-alcohol laws are a patchwork quilt of crazy.

Huh, the supermarkets in my hometown, Morristown NJ, have alcohol sections. The A&P has the booze right in the same isle as the toothpaste.

I usually have a bowl of cereal or a bagel. This morning was breakfast burritos from McDonald's bought on the way back from an early doctor's appointment.

Uh, really, octothorpe? That's, well, illegal as far as I know. The closest you can get is a liquor store adjoining the supermarket, and there are only a handful of them. This is the most recent article I could find in a very quick search.

Unless it's changed in the last three weeks. I was in King's Supermarket in Morristown last month and they still had an alcohol section. I've bought beer there many times.

And if you look at this page, the A&P in Morristown has Beer, Wine and Spirits listed. I'm really not crazy, I have bought beer in supermarkets in New Jersey.

I work afternoons/evenings, so breakfast for me is usually around 9:30 or 10:00 in the morning, and there's no rush. Usually: Muesli in milk or plain yogurt, a fried egg, and a marmaladed slice of wholegrain bread like chleb farmerski. (It's sooooooo crusty. And I love crust.) Washed down with a massive glass of milk.

Most days I don't need lunch until 3!

Doohickie, those are rissoles, not sausage.
posted by dg 13 November | 19:20
My body is generally the very opposite of hungry (wtf lolcer) until about 4-6 hours after I wake up, and the mini-meal routine makes my blood sugar do ridiculous things, so I tend not to bother with breakfast unless I'm on vacation... which is a shame, because I love the food and the ritual and wish I could take advantage of the health benefits. I try to make up for it somewhat by having a tea-like meal on off-days with fruit and some sort of homemade sweet bread, and my dinner is some incarnation of egg+toast more than half the time. Usually egg-in-the-hole.

On a side note re: beer where no beer has gone before, octothorpe, I have heard that the new Giant Eagle in Robinson somehow has a beer section. I'm not sure how they managed it (or why they stuck it out in Robinson), but perhaps other stores might find a way to follow suit.
posted by notquitemaryann 13 November | 19:22
I am so confused by your being able to buy beer in an NJ supermarket, octothorpe. I'm from NJ and back there often to visit family, and you still can't do it there. I wonder if maybe, just maybe, it's county by county.

And PA has that weird beer 'distributor' system

Crazy, amirite? I always used to wonder "If the goal is to make sure people consume alcohol safely and responsibly, then why make someone buy it an entire case at a time?" Just seems like it encourages overdrinking. Well, actually, I know it does from when I lived in Philly.

I've never heard the word "rissole" before. Everywhere I've ever been, those are called sausage patties.
posted by Doohickie 14 November | 00:24
And no, they are not any kind of rissole described at that link. There are no potatoes or breadcrumbs or carbs of any kind in there. It is sausage meat, formed into patties, exactly the same kind of mixture that is in breakfast sausage links.
posted by Doohickie 14 November | 00:28
Where I live, that's a rissole.

I never eat breakfast during the week - I'm still half-asleep when I leave home anyway and I just slurp down a coffee. On the weekend, usually cereal.

I must say that I love that this post has half-devolved into a discussion of local liquor laws.

More of the same: tomorrow, it will be Sunday. And, here in Arkansas, the only places that are allowed to sell takeout booze are brewpubs, which are only allowed to sell growlers. A growler is a half-gallon of beer, best consumed shortly after opening. Well, and there's a brewery in town, and, for some reason, they're allowed to sell six-packs.

For the benefit of middleclasstool, the only takeout beer options in Little Rock on a Sunday are growlers at Vino's or Boscos, or bottles from 12-5 or so at Diamond Bear.

Also: if I ever come to visit you, crushy, I like things-that-aren't-sold-in-AR (sorry, Goose Island), especially imperials and IPAs.
