Godfrey Cambridge had a routine once (I can't find a clip) in which he credited black people for naming this sauce. . .

You had to see it, and of course Cambridge could get away with such stuff.

My dad calls it What's This Here Sauce. I don't know where he got it. He's capable of having arrived at it independently, but maybe not. Origins lost in the mists of time.
