TGIF - Do Gooders Division, Northern New England! [More:]

Today I finally am making good on my career transition, in a small but beautiful way.

I signed the paperwork to be the paid Coordinator of this campaign this afternoon - it's no big shakes, financially - a modest stipend every three months, with another modest bonus added if I can exceed our stated goals.

BUT....I am at last receiving a paycheck for doing what my heart tells me to do and my actions now immediately and directly assist those in need.

I think this has to be one of the happiest days of my life. If any of you want to have fun thinking of cool fund-raising ideas, marketing slogans, events, I'm all ears.

You'd be making folks who are having a seriously rough time of it economically have some food to eat and heat in their homes through the winter. Not a mean feat around these parts, I can assure you.

Good on ya!

It was all through networking out here, Stewie. Some of my good friends out here are also the "Pillars of the Portsmouth Community", so when this opportunity came up, they all immdiately thought of me because I volunteer around so much and helped out a ton on last year's campaign for free.

It's a hell of a compliment, and going to be two hell's worth of effort to make it go well. But I'm doing it, I'm living and being paid for my values, and some poor soul in my community will eat well and be warm in the shittiest time of the year.

I'll sleep very well tonight.

A little less than a month ago you posted a thread in which I wrote this:

I envision a wonderful career in advocacy and grassroots organizing for kick-ass political causes you are dedicated to! You just glow (in text form) when you talk about the volunteering you do, and I admire you whole-heartedly! Hang in: tough times pass. It took me a long time to figure that out, and it's my mantra. xxoo to you.

Glad I was right. I had little doubt, actually.

I'm glad stew was right too!

YOU CAN HAS!

Congrats, lovey: this is an ideal role for you and I'll be surprised if you can't make it even more successful than it has been. Looking forward to the fun!

Elsa - no it means you're now on the hook for doing that for this campaign with me.

SCENE: Elementary school cafeteria. A fidgety group of school children are sitting at the tables and wrinkling their noses at the cauliflower hotdog smell that is always present. ELSA and LT arrive on the little stage at the front of the cafeteria.

LT: (operating a life-size puppet of Cold Person):

It sure is c-c-c-old this winter. I'm kind of hungry, too. What am I GOING TO DO?

ELSA: (operating a life-size puppet of a regal Queen dressed in yellow and red):

"FEAR NOT, Little Cold Person of the Town! I am Queen Heatitia, granter of all good wishes! What can I wish for YOU?"

and so on....

the cauliflower hotdog smell

Wow. You nailed it, and a thousand sixth-grade memories came rushing back, unbidden and unwelcome.

I would be down for the Queen Heatitia puppet show, though.
