20 September 2009

day earlier, day later? If offered the choice of 2 days to interview for a potential job, Thursday or Friday, which would you choose and why? Does it matter? Am I over thinking this plate of beans?
I choose to go in as soon as possible, because I feel like earlier candidates will have an advantage. There is no factual basis to that belief, just a gut feeling. Probably makes no difference.

Later. The last candidates are still in their mind when they are making their decision.

See, I was juggling both of these lines of reasoning and couldn't decide.

Friday it is.

My gut feeling is to agree with going later, for the reason jonathanstrange states.

If the interview is on Friday after lunch, the interviewer may be relaxed (which could be a good thing), or may just want to finish work for the week. It could go either way but maybe something to consider.

Friday always. If they haven't made a decision prior (i.e. on a thursday) it makes you look better being the last candidate seen before the weekend.

In my experience conducting interviews, it doesn't matter. Working for the State, we are required to interview a certain subset of applicants and have to have very good reasons why someone is not interviewed. It's my understanding that in a for-profit company (where I have never worked, FWIW), they are not required to keep interviewing if their first interviewee is a perfect fit. Maybe this isn't true?

I'VE BEEN DOING IT ALL WRONG, THIS IS WHY I DON'T HAVE A JOB

I've been on our hiring committee for almost seven years. In my experience, it doesn't matter. If we're interviewing you, then we're interested in what you have to say. Really. If not, we wouldn't be bothering talking to you at all. So take either, and make sure you give good interview -- I think that's all that matters. Caveat: non-profit.

I've been involved in many hiring processes and I really doubt that a day either way will matter much. We just interviewed someone on Friday (who we liked) but we're waiting until we interview someone on Wednesday to choose. This hire is really important to us because he/she will be one of only five in our team and we have a ton of work to do; the order that we interview isn't going to effect our choice.

So, yea, don't worry about the day. Just prepare like hell: research the company/organization, study relevant material, etc. I find that having a written list of questions for them helps me since they always ask if you have questions.

Having hired people, the earlier the better. People who say later are ones that hope that there are a lot of completely unqualified people, so their semi qualified state stands out. In the end, it doesn't really matter. If you're qualified, you'll get the job, or be close, and the final decision doesn't really matter regarding timing. Seriously. When doesn't nearly count so much as who and what. Of course, anyone is more than welcome to say otherwise, like they didn't get a job because they were later in the process, but really, that's not true. Just look at who has jobs, and what they say. That's enough I think.

Regardless of if they acknowledge it or not, people have bias towards primacy and recency when evaluating performance. (Google "primacy recency evaluation" if you're curious, but here's a nice little abstract.)

In other words, you ideally want to be first or last. Does it matter more than the actual quality of your performance? Probably not, but it can make the difference if you have control over it. That said, unless you know for sure that Thursday is the first day or Friday is the last day they are interviewing, this is a tough one to game.

If I found out you dithered over a decision this insignificant, I wouldn't hire you.

Oh - good luck~!

My vote for Thursday, assuming you will be wearing business attire. If people at the workplace are dressing down for Friday and you're wearing a suit, that will add a little tension.
