What I do for work...on CNN today! [More:]
Last week I got a last-minute phone call that CNN was going to be taping a segment for their morning show about some changes in the sex education laws here in NC. The organization that CNN was working with asked me if I could get some of the young people I worked with to be interviewed. Short notice, but I was able to reach one young woman. She's the one with an excellent sound-bite in the video. (Here's the transcript if you don't want video.)

There was a small possibility that I was going to be interviewed, too, but I escaped, thank goodness!

I really wish you all could have heard this panel of young men and women who work tirelessly to help their peers prevent pregnancy and STDs. The conversations I hear and the wisdom the teens give me is what keeps me going on a day-to-day basis. They are so great.
That is very cool.

I saw it this morning! Your girl was definitely the most articulate in the bunch, probably in the whole segment.

Well, the whole group was pretty articulate, to tell the truth. I think what my gal said was just the strongest example of how bad it got. I hate it when people who oppose giving kids more information to work with don't recognize or even deny that good sex ed spends a lot of time giving kids the skills and information they need to stay abstinent. It just also gives them the skills and information to reduce risk of pregnancy and STDs when they do eventually become sexually active.

Stewriffic, I must echo chewatadistance's sentiment, what you do is cool as hell, and I am proud to know you. Good work, girl!

It would have been a lot more effective to have a bunch of pregnant girls or ones with smudge-face yard-apes hanging on their calves talk forthrightly about how well abstinence education works.

B ut then my mind works that way. ;-)

Chewie, that last comment of mine was in (self-) response to a link I posted and then asked be deleted. I emailed it to you for more context.
