Gee, my heart bleeds. Interesting, in contrast to this Income inequality article earlier in the week.

I'm less annoyed about the whiny rich folks than I am about the fact that the Times thought that this was a good use of their limited reporting resources.

I thought that article was fascinating. Such a cautionary tale- I'm sure if I had $100 million dollars like McAfee, a part of me would be like, weeee, that's all the money in the world! But it's not, money is not infinite. And if you spend it on stuff you don't need that you have to maintain, you're going to run out of it pretty fast.

The New York Times will break your heart if you let it; it's best to treat that paper the way you would an old friend who's joined a cult or suffered a head injury and just isn't himself anymore.

TPS speaks wisely. It's not as if you could take the open-cockpit planes down to the corner mechanic when they need maintenance.

I'm kind of envisioning one of these people losing their useless yacht and people who can't afford a yacht going down to the harbor to totally trash it and fuck it up. It sounds fun.

In fact, are yachts recyclable into raw material ?

You could probably refit one for trawling or smuggling or something useful, or donate it to a small country with no navy.

Sadly? This is totally relevant to my work interests because without people spending millions on apartments, I don't get paid. :(

But who does it better? NPR, BBC? There's still a shitload of hard news there on the NYT front page. I can't see flaming them because they have society and fashion stuff too.

In other words . . . you'd be decent and gracious to the guy and hang out with him when he's lucid. But if he starts ranting or doing things that make you uncomfortable, you make a polite excuse, walk away, and don't take the behavior seriously.

You don't cut him off 100%; you readjust your boundaries with him. And that's the way I treat the NYT.

Does the analogy make sense now?

It's funny. My primary news sources are the NYT and WBEZ (the local NPR affiliate). I find both the NYT and NPR tone-deaf when it comes to lifestyle stuff. NYT seems to do this cringe-worthy oh-so-rich thing without fail. NPR, on the other hand, gives me the fremdenschamen with their radio plays and little songs and those sorts of nonstories. I guess I'm just humorless? Probably not, though, cause I think the Daily Show is hilarious.

Also, I can't tell you the number of times I've seen Times' "fluff" pieces that read like a two minute roundup of the front pages of Metafilter and delicious' popular links. I suppose some part of me understands why they think they have to bother, but the trying annoys me enough to wish I had another better news source.

I was interviewed by the Times today for a puff profile thing on NYC Bohemia. I expect to be as embarassing as it can be.
