Ask MeCha: If you were walking down the street on a Saturday afternoon and saw someone selling a big box of pretty good DVDs, how much would you pay to buy a few? A buck a pop? Three for five?
I sometimes see DVDs and VHS tapes at book sales or yard sales. Usually a buck a piece. For the most part, I wouldn't pay more. The last ones I got were "Annie Hall", "Galaxy Quest" and "Tampopo". Stuff I'd seen before, but I'd pay a buck to see again.

Ah, haven't seen Tampopo in years...

Sounds about right to me. Of course, I'd check that the right media was in there and not too scuffed up. Even then I'd have a generous expectation of unplayability (20%ish). The toothpaste cure might help, of course.

It would depend whether they were bootlegs or the people's own stuff they were selling.

And on whether I thought they were stolen.

Sheesh, you guys!

These are our own original DVDs. In good condition, and in good taste! I'm going to sit outside the flat in a skimpy dress with a big sign saying "1£" (careful, now) and try and make some money and clear out some the hundreds of DVDs we have.

Can I get away with £1.50?

Oh! What I remember of CD resale shops is they buy from you for 25% and sell for 50%. Is there a place like that nearby? You might make more money.

Not really, it's a small town. Besides, this way, I've got an excuse to sit outside in the sun and drink beer...

In the situation you're describing (someone sitting outside a flat, obviously lives there, neatly dressed) I'd say $2 a dvd, or three for $5, would be a fair deal.

Except I dunno how that translates into English money. What do new dvds go for? £20 - £25 (it's about that in CDN)? Then yes, either scheme of £1 to £1.50 (for older dvds?) or £2 for two/£5 for three (for newer dvds) seems fair.

I hope all that makes sense.
