06 August 2009

Woot, I'm employed! [More:] The very day before my temp assignment was to max out, campus finally came through and approved my backdoor contract. My department wasn't allowed to recruit for my position or hire me on an emergency basis because of a hiring freeze, so they had to create a new contractual position for me. Also, because of some really stupid circular bureaucratic bullshit, it had to be substantially different from the job I was doing, otherwise campus would have said to the department, "Why don't you just recruit for this position?" (Which they couldn't do. Because of the hiring freeze.)

But anyway, this months-long process is finally over, and I just signed a contract, and I am officially employed in a better job with a higher salary. AND, because it's a contract position, I'm exempt from the system-wide furloughs. (Which is doubly good, because my new salary bumped me up into the second furlough tier, so I would have had to take an 8% cut instead of a 4% cut, and I would have actually been making less than I was before the salary increase.)

AND I get vision insurance, so I can finally replace these glasses on my face that really aren't doing their job anymore.

So, so relieved. It's been a shitty month, and I was just waiting for this to fall through.

How's everyone else's work/life mojo going?

*exhale*
Hey! Congrats mudpuppie! That's great news, and it's always nice when a period of stress can come to a close!

Work is shitty - my favourite trainee told me today that she's leaving. I thought she would. She's young, incredibly bright (law degree from Oxford, Masters from Harvard). She's going to work with a charity that helps death row prisoners in New Orleans, just for a few months. We both asked management if she could have unpaid leave, but they said no, she has to resign. I'll miss her, she's a great kid.

My other two trainees are hard work, one more so than the other, because I don't like her very much, so I have to work harder to not show it. I really want to build one of these, and lock it from the inside.

But tomorrow I'm working from home, so the trainees' questions will be by email, which cuts out the inanity somewhat.

(oh, and I did notice you asking how we all were. I'm just too stressed and miserable right now to type out a pile of complaining. It's not fun to live, let alone read about!)

Oh right, I forgot the "how's everyone else" part... I just failed to get a job that I interviewed for a couple weeks ago, but they rejected me because I'm perfect for another job in the same organization, doing more interesting work for more pay, so I have an interview for that on Monday morning. Meanwhile a cat lady moved in downstairs and now the whole building smells like a fucking litterbox. What's the best way to tell a cat person to clean up after her animals? I'm usually pretty direct but sometimes cat people can be touchy.

Woot indeed!

I'm mainly celebrating my new Trek 7.3 FX, which I bought and rode for the first time last night. The miles melt away, and hopefully, so does the waistline!

Hooray, mudpuppie! That's fantastic news. I am so glad to hear that our previously unemployed bunnies are finding employment again. I especially like to hear about it when it is a better job with better pay. Good luck with your interview on Monday, Hugh Janus.

Yay for mudpuppie!!

*crosses fingers for Hugh* Man, it's gonna be hard to type until Monday.

I will be up in your hood in two weeks. Let's go get drinks to celebrate!

Let's do! (Send me dates, though. My folks will be in town at the end of the month.)

Congrats! The new situation sounds awesome.
I am doing ok, I just did a courtesy interview with someone totally unsuited to our department with no relevent experience. I wonder if the candidate is related to someone here. She has 4 interviews set up with different depts today and the HR director seems keen to place her at the company by force, though we aren't officially hiring and she doesn't seem to fit anywhere. I find this kind of thing frustrating, but I guess good on her for being so tenacious in finding a job.

WOOT! That is fantastic news. Here's to you for hanging in there. The uncertainty is what makes it hard.

Good luck, Hugh, and keep the faith, seekers...

That'll do.

That is fantastic news, mudpuppie. And awesomeness abounds to Hugh for the interview for the better position.

I am still riding high on my raise from two weeks ago, but am nervous because we've got a closing/final walkthrough coming up that my boss is not in town for; this means that I have to be the broker and I don't feel like I'm ready for that kind of responsibility yet.

Does Arnold know about this. No way I'm telling him, but still.

Woohoo, that's exciting! I've had some good interviews lately, so I think employment is imminent. And employed or not, I'm going to see my family next week in Florida, yaaay.

Yay for 'pupps, yay for new glasses - (which I'll probably be getting next week too.

Huge crossed fingers for Hugh and TPS, and all the other job seeking buns out there.

It sounds like you're in, Hugh. They clearly want you in the company. And that scenario sounds like exactly what happened when I got my job a few months ago. I hope this comes through for you, as you sounded really interested in the company and the job. You deserve it.

News from me? I finished my 3 month probation yesterday! It's usually a technicality here, but it's nice knowing that it's all official etc. Huge yay! And after 3 months, I'm still enjoying the work. Huge yay!

Nothing else to report though.

Yay!

I've got my mojo heading to hopefulness for Drexel to accept me. I really want to go there (where I seem to be wanted) as opposed to the state school that seems to be treating me like I'm not even wanted. (Seriously, state school? You need the money. Don't piss me off.)
I also got a real pasta roller machine today. I'm very excited to test that bad boy out this weekend. And maybe make more cupcakes.

Yay for employment!

Today my manager called a department meeting and basically said, "some of you sitting in this room will be gone in October." They're calculating (comparatively pretty generous, from what people are saying) severance packages based on how long we've worked here, and I'm the newest hire and now I'm terrified.
posted by casarkos 07 August | 17:22
Ulp.

casarkos- there is a weird phenomenon whereby the last hired is almost never the first fired (or laid off). The person before you is toast, but you may be okay.

I hope.
