So, the inaugural MeCha Movie of the Month is.... Chopper.[More:]So today I was listening to an interview with Eric Bana on Fresh Air (from last week). I don't really have any feelings one way or the other on Bana, but they did bring up his first feature movie role in the Aussie biopic Chopper, about real-life criminal turned author Mark "Chopper" Read.

The movie got pretty good reviews, and should be accessible-ish to most people, I hope, though I doubt many here have already seen it (I found it pretty difficult to try to find something that fit most of the criteria I mentally came up with).

I do hope this gets us off to a good start. Feedback? Yays/Nays? Anyone seen it already?
I've seen it. Solid pick. I might watch it again, might discuss it from memory.

It's not bad. I saw it in 2000 when it came out. I'm not sure how much discussion would arise from it, though. Of course, for Australian violent films, I prefer 1992's Romper Stomper.

Sounds intriguing, for sure!

Heh, CC. Romper Stomper was the default house movie among a bunch of punk/hXc kids I ran with in the mid to late 90's. I'm not sure I've sat down and watched it straight through, but I've probably seen it a dozen or so times piecemealed.

I've seen it, but just once, and I'm not sure I was, uh, paying much attention--maybe it was on while I was playing cards and drunk, y'know? I'll watch it again.

Excellent. I haven't seen it and always meant to. Mr Read used to tour around here doing his...well...comedy (I guess) act but I was never brave enough to buy a ticket. I wonder if he's still touring?

This is so totally the opposite style of most of the things on my 478 DVD/139 Instant queue... which means that MMM is paying off for me already. Queue'd, should get it Thursdayish.

Netflixed. By when do I have to have it watched by. Apparently there's a small wait.

And uh, is that really Eric Bana? Holy freak he looks... different.

You've got a few weeks, eatdonuts. I'll post the discussion thread towards the end of August.

Ooh! I'm friends with chopper's nephew. Fo' realz. Never seen the film though. I'm in too. Ps. Eric bana was famous as a sketch act comedian before chopper came out. Heh!

Eric Bana is a fantastic actor.

I remember feeling a bit underwhelmed when I saw Chopper; I don't think I'll watch it again just yet. Read serioulsy freaks me out & I feel a bit uncomfortable that this thug has become a celebrity. For the trivia enthusiasts, some of the characters in Chopper are based on criminals who were also portrayed in Underbelly, so see if you can work our who is who on the "family tree".
