It all worked out OK. Better than OK. [More:]After a rocky and rough ride this year following the termination of my position from the budget, I have been beating the pavement for work and despairing about the future. But good news struck, and this week I was offered a new job, at a fantastic place, with better pay than I make now. It means a lot of changes and it will be a very tough job, but it's intriguing and challenging in the right way, and I"m really looking forward to what it will make possible. Thanks to all of you for commiserating, helping, and suggesting places to search/apply to. For those of you still looking, take heart and don't give up. Making a living is a neverending challenge, but keep at it. Let us be brave in the attempt.
Awesome, good for you Miko :)

Good for you, Miko.

I'm still sending out my CV, but can't get an interview. I'm lucky in that I already have a job, but the competition is so fierce that, even where my skills and experience are a great fit, I'm rejected at the first stage.

essexjan: that's where I am: lucky I have a job and unable to get an interview anywhere. I feel especially frustrated because right now, I'm willing to work--basically--for free at the right public interest organization for at least a year, just so I can get back into work I value, but no dice. It's crazy. If you were closer, I'd be offering to send your CV to everyone I know, or at least offering to buy you lunch to commiserate. It's madness. Total madness.

EJ, I didn't know you were looking. Good luck!

My observations about competition have been similar. That's something that adds additional suck to this abysmal job market. First, there are fewer jobs, due to all the cuts. And if that were the extent of it, that'd be bad enough. But in addition, due to the widespread layoffs in all sectors, there are a ton of very qualified people also out there looking - which means every applicant is up against a lot of other really good people. It makes it very frustratingly tough.

I'm not desperately unhappy in my work, but we've taken on a lot of new staff. Over half the staff have been there less than a year, and because there are so few experienced staff, we are having to both deal with the most complex cases and mentor new people. I'm currently mentoring three people, which involves reviewing every piece of work they do, and case discussions on all their files. I also have a very heavy caseload of my own.

Two of my trainees are in their very first jobs out of college and are woefully inexperience for the work (the investigation of complex banking disputes). The third is a 35-year-old woman who likes to act like a little girl, all pouty and giggly. She's also unteachable and is full of yes-but.

On top of that, there are a ton of contract staff, who are paid FIVE TIMES AS MUCH AS ME!!! And we are not allowed to go and work for the contractors if we resign, yes I've thought of that already. A friend of mine is working for my company through the contractors and that's how I found out how much they're paid.

If this is what you want, 'tis wonderful news. Change, while oft times intimidating, is invariably a good thing. It sounds like you already have a positive attitude about the potential opportunity. Good on you.

Way to go, Meeks! In a related story, I just put in this morning for a Family Advocate position at a local domestic abuse advocacy group. If I get it, it would be a dream job.
