A Talk Show Host Prepares
A nice little NYT piece on Conan O'Brien and the changing late night talk show landscape.
I am so very excited about Conan taking over the Tonight Show, and so very saddened by the idea of Leno at 9:00 every day. I've never understood his appeal at all. But then again I don't think there was ever much worth watching on NBC at 9:00 central.
I think Leno has handled this horribly. He is being stubborn and refusing to relinquish the reins, knowing full well he'll cut into Conan's ratings.
There were some funny moments in the last days of Late Night when guests would come on and talk smack about Leno and Conan would just sit there looking uncomfortable and say something diplomatic, but you knew deep down he agreed.
I remember Leno taking over, and I hated him then and still think he sucks now.
And Conan? That guy is still here? I remember him as some new guy with a show, and never thought he would stick around. Suddenly he has been doing his thing for 16 years and taking over from Leno? WTF?

I second you with the feeling of oldness, oh such oldness. I remember Conan's introduction (though he'd been a comedy writer for a long time, I wasn't savvy enough to know his name at the time), and the many many jokes made at his expense.
Most vividly, I remember a background joke in an animated series --- maybe The Critic? --- where a newspaper headline read "CONAN REPLACED BY DANCING CHICKEN."
