WWGHB?→[More:](What Would a Goth Hobbit Buy)
What online home furnishing /decorating resources would a 60s art deco goth hobbit like?
or more to the point, what are your decorating inspirations and resources?
Magazines and, occasionally, works of art- though almost always in practice it's been, like for Ardiril, whatever's at the Goodwill. Still, I try to aim for a certain look. Growing up, I memorized the contents of my mother's Victoria magazines, and then later, when I decided I wanted to study to become an architect, my indulgent art teacher supplied me with decades of back issues of Architectural Digest and ARTnews and Burlington and the like. Another thought for getting in the mood of a certain style- immerse yourself in movies either made or set in the time period and pay close attention to the props.
I am not compulsively crafty, but I like finding things for cheap or free and fixing them so they'll fit in with whatever I already own- sewing new curtains out of a gorgeous brocade found on sale, or hammering together a paperback-only bookshelf out of Ikea bed slats picked up from a curb. If you get an idea of something in your head and make a point of looking out for potential components, sooner or later it tends to fall in your path. For both 60s and art deco, you could do a lot with stencils and wall decoration if you're allowed to paint, or hanging fabric if you're not. Tons of wood and woven things and ceramics for 60s, and chrome and glass and bold cool colors for art deco. Goth hobbit sounds like it could work as the gloomier sort of art nouveau. Difficult, but not impossible.
Don't ask me - I think the epitome of style is to have a pink/terra cotta colored living room, a Grape Nehi-colored hallway, and a bedroom painted something called Japanese Koi on the can, but which looks far more akin to Mom's Mac and Cheese Recipe on the walls.
And I love it. I also consider icicle lights indoors the height of fashion, and have festooned my bay window with all manner of detritus from the many beaches hereabouts.
If I were a woman, there'd be easily about 50 cats living up in this bitch by now.
I am a bit of a free/thrift-shop magpie as well, and I love Americana kitsch and old stuff, as well as nature-influenced decor. My kitchen aims to be a 1940s farm housewife's, with lots of red and white. I like wood surfaces, shells, and wrought iron. I don't think it coheres into a style, it's just me. I guess we can call it "eclectic."
Kind of cottage funky. My choices are driven by cost, color and environmental impact. I moved last year to a cottage by a lake. It was rehabbed and all the cottage charm was thoroughly eradicated. I'm trying to put it back.
