What consumer products will you not buy in the store brand version?
Actifed. I has to be actual Actifed and not the store brand which claims to be the same but isn't.

Advil & Excedrin - same reason.

I have no problem with generic perscription drugs though.

Skin stuff, soap, and shampoo. I don't know if this is laziness or brand loyalty.

Frozen dinners, when we buy them. Pasta.
posted by muddgirl 20 May | 13:09
Frosted Flakes. Even though since I've moved out (and moved an open box of them), I haven't eaten them.
And my astringent (Pink Clean&Clear, which is basically like firebombing my face, but oh so good).

Heinz Ketchup. Most breakfast cereal.

Raisin Bran, the raisins in store brands are often very hard and tasteless.

Breakfast cereal and toilet paper.
posted by deborah 20 May | 14:10
Yeah, breakfast cereal for me too.

Mayo. Has to be Hellman's.
Peanut butter. Only Jiff in this house.
Coffee.
posted by Kangaroo 20 May | 14:19
Yeah, toilet paper. Lately I've found some cereals are OK in the store brand version, at least Raisin Bran, Rice Chex, Corn Flakes. (I remember years ago trying some store brand "Grape Nuts" that promptly turned to cement in the bottom of the bowl after the milk was added.)

Dr Pepper, of course. None of the imitators is even close.
Miracle Whip.
Campbell's Split Pea w/ Ham.

Cereal, Q-tips (I've been burned by those flimsy plastic crappy ones), tampons, garbage bags, dish soap.
The generics just don't hold up or work as well.

Orange juice. I think that's pretty much it.
posted by danostuporstar 20 May | 14:57
rmless2, I have the same thing - garbage bags, Q-tips, and tampons/pads.

Coffee is a good one, though. Times are tough when I mix in the store brand coffee with the end of the Folgers.

Dr Pepper, of course. None of the imitators is even close.

Texas grocery chain HEB (named for Howard E. Butt) has a Dr. Pepper knock-off called Dr. B.... Which would be Dr. Butt.

Have you tried that one? Maybe Dr. Butt is the imitator you've been looking for.

Anyway, I find that my list comes to condiments, tampons, and sandwich bread. Pretty much anything else is fair game.

muddgirl - Pasta? Fresh pasta? I can't tell the difference between boxed pasta. You have a discerning palate!

Same here.

Best Foods Mayo, Heinz Ketchup, Campbells soup.

I've noticed that generic tomato products seem to be the most different (tomato soup, ketchup, sauce). The generic ones are tinny and biter to me, regardless of brand.

We buy whole-wheat pasta, and I think i can tell the difference between a more expensive brand and the store brand. It could be all in my head but the more expensive stuff tastes nuttier and less aggressively wheaty.

Dr. Becker isn't Dr. Pepper--it's better.

I noticed with mild amusement yesterday that, though I buy the store brand baking soda, I will not buy the store brand baking powder.
posted by Elsa 20 May | 16:31
I can taste a difference in dried pasta. Ronzoni is my favorite.

Heinz kethchup, Hellman's mayo, and deodorant. I am loyal to Secret.
posted by LoriFLA 20 May | 16:34
Heinz ketchup is my big one, for sure. I just bought store brand wheat thins for the first time yesterday, so we'll see how those are.

I buy Safeway's cheap brand of kleenex because I think the packaging looks better than all the name brands.

Also, I've been loyal to Bausch & Lomb contact solution, which may be stupid since they had a recall.

oh, hmmmm. This may explain why that two-for-the-price-of-one whole super cheapy whole wheat fusilli tasted like doody.

Yes on Heinz Ketchup. I always get Gilette razors and shaving foam -- for some reason that seems to make an otherwise odious task just a little bit easier.
posted by AwkwardPause 20 May | 18:03
Q-tips. I've made this mistake time and again. No more.
Kraft Mac and Cheese
Toothpaste--Colgate Total.
posted by Stewriffic 20 May | 18:12
Feminine products and deodorant. I like most of my store's brands, no matter what department. I did notice a difference in my store's packaged mac n cheese and Shoprite's packaged mac n cheese. Ours is better.

Oreos and Blue Plate Mayo. Not together, even though I guess because I love both I could spread Blue Plate on my Oreos. Hmm...might have to try that.

Heinz--used to be I'd only buy it in the glass bottle, but they don't sell them anymore. Tide detergent. Pampers diapers (the boy whizzes right through anything else).

I love the Target generic cereals, though. They rock. Actually, most of Target's generic food is really good.
posted by jrossi4r 20 May | 19:54
Oh yeah, definitely Q-tips as well. And I didn't know there were store brand feminine products, heh.

I'm not against store brands as a whole. I give them a chance and will use them if they're as good as name brands or at least a decent substitute. Although I prefer real diet Coke, Safeway's version of diet Coke is very drinkable as well as much cheaper.
