What the ?? Obama aims to nominate a Supreme Court Justice who has empathy and understanding for how the law is applied. RNC Chairman Michael Steele responds. "Crazy nonsense empathetic! I'll give you empathy. Empathize right on your behind. Craziness!"[More:]Associated Press article (via Slate)

Sorry if this is too political. It was just one of those WTF moments.
I'm almost convinced that the entire Republican party has been replaced by a troop of surrealist performance artists who are just having fun with us. They can't be that bonkers, can they?

Michael Steele is certainly a "surrealist performance artist", but jester is more concise. However, Obama's statement, "justice isn't about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a case book. It is also about how our laws affect the daily realities of people's lives," is rather bizarre in its own right.

Steele sat Looey beside former Terp QB Bobby Erlich in the Free State's first (R) administration in ages, but the only reason Erlich ever got the job was the fury of Marylanders about the ineptitude of the (D) Glendening administration and their rejection of the insult offered them by the state (D) party in the person of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who had just managed to screw up her own lieutenant governorship. Then Steele lost to Cardin when Sarbanes' Senate seat opened up, and now he's in charge of the whole national Republican party.

I mean, this guy's a fucking nobody!

"a fucking nobody!" - Well, there was that stint playing bass for the Bangles.

Jesus. I didn't realize that was an actual quote. I thought you were doing some kind of Johnnie Cochran/Jackie Childs thing.

During the 2002 MD gubernatorial election campaign they had a debate, and later Steele claimed that Oreos were rolled at him from the audience with racist intent. He said, "Maybe it was just someone having their snack, but it was there."

I mean, he really said that.

"Empathy is just a liberal buzzword for judicial activism."

Jesus, you can't write stuff like that.

No, ColdChef, no satire there. That is quite representative of Steele's public persona. If lunacy were celebrity, he could knock both Limbaugh and Hannity off the air in just a couple days.

When I left the Republican party in 1982, I vowed I would see its destruction before I died. I think that very well may come to pass within the next few years.

In a tersely worded rejoinder to RNC Chairman Michael Steele's comments, President Barrack Obama today responded in an official briefing, "No You."

Here, let me start a countermeme: "Empathy is just a liberal buzzword for strict constructionism." Not too catchy, but I'll keep working on it.

Just guessing, but I figure that, after the one-two punch of the Limbaugh thing and then the 'in the heezy' thing, Steele figures that a)there's beef, and b)his homies don't have his back. That's a horrible place to be, no matter how much of an ass you are.

I am visiting my right-wing-fringe grandparents this summer. I think I am going to walk around their house repeating this quote (although they probably had a heart attack when a black guy was made head of the RNC).

Don't worry, Scody, I'm still no liberal. I am more of a libertarian well within spitting distance of being an anarchist. I am writing a story now that describes where I think American politics is heading. For a clue, recall the race wars that raged within the larger feminist blogs a couple years back.
