Pierced nose? [More:] So it happened. Hanging out with the younger crowd at the high school where she teaches has gotten through to Mrs. Doohickie. She asked what I thought about her getting her nose pierced, kind of like this. I was just kind of....

Ew.

Am I an old fogey?
Yes, but we already knew that.

Yes. That's the piercing I have and I'm surprised by how many people I see around here [rural Vermont] who have something similar.

I probably wouldn't get one myself, but I think the little embedded dot ones like that are cute.

What's the right term for that kind of flat stud that sits flush to the skin without anything sticking up? Does it have a post and a post backing inside of the nose?

marsha: my little flat disc that sat flush to my nostril piercing had a corkscrew tail, not a post and post backing.

That's the piercing I had. I ended up having to abandon it because of sinus issues.

marsha56, those are just called flat or flat-fitting nose screws. Nostril studs usually don't have a backing (at least, I've never seen anything that has), they're as crush has described.

Now I'm really considering re-piercing my nose... Hoop for me though, no stud.

I have the same one. It's so small that most people don't notice it after a while, or even realize I have one. I think you'll just get used to it on your wife's face as if it were a freckle.

I had a mole removed right where most people would get a piercing. I should have left it there and gilded it. Would have felt better!

I could never get away1 with it myself but I wouldn't be bothered if Ms. Octo got one.

1. What I mean by not getting away with it is that I would just look like a dorky middle-aged guy trying to stay hip.

I've had one just like that for *tries to calculate* more than a decade. Never had any issues with it - even get through hayfever season fine. In fact I don't notice it most of the time.

Not really a big deal (you old fogie!).

The mister responded like you did, Doohickie. He quickly became used to it and even said it was cute (I had a stud/nose screw).

I miss mine (fell out in bed). I keep threatening to get it re-done, but haven't taken the time.

Tell Mrs. D that she'll have to constantly clean off boogers from it.
posted by brujita 18 May | 23:44
I think eyeball piercings connected by a chain are pretty hot.
The booger-cleaning thing depends heavily on one's individual biology--the short version is that if Mrs. D isn't constantly cleaning boogers now (the way that someone with sinus or allergy issues, or someone in a dry dusty climate, might have to do), she probably won't be after she gets the nostril piercing either, especially if she uses a piece of dedicated nostril jewelry (like a nostril screw) rather than an earring with a regular back--years ago, when people didn't always have good sources for piercing jewelry, wearing a regular earring was a lot more common.

Wearing a nostril screw didn't help my any...I would yank it out in my sleep when my nose was bothering me.

SpiffyGF had one of those, and took it out for a wedding a few weeks back, and has since let the hole close.

She said it was for professional reasons, (she just finished a Master's and has started job hunting) and obviously, it's her call, but I miss it. It was super-cute.

If you need to be sneaky you can always get a retainer too.

I've had a nose stud for over 20 years. (OMG I'm THAT old, how can that be?). Haven't had one in for a few days - dunno where it's gone. I've left it out for weeks but the piercing is so old it's never closed over. It gets commented on much less now than it did 20 years ago, piercings are so common place and noses are almost as vanilla as ears in these days of pierced eyebrows, lips, tongues, etc not to mention all the not quite so obvious places.

Piggy-back question: what's a good and reputable US online source for piercing jewelry? (a la the UK based one gomichild linkes to)

I took mine out a couple of weeks ago. I miss it.

Though I never did find the right sized stud so that it didn't swirl around and drive me batshitinsane.

AwkwardPause: I've had consistently great experiences with Bodyartforms.

My wife got hers done a few years ago, at age 32 or so. I think it's hot.

The one that came out while I was sleeping was a nose/nostril screw. Not sure how I managed that. I also never had a booger problem with having my nose pierced in spite of what my mum said would happen. Pffft, what do mum's know anyway.
