Liptstick and nipple color How do ladies pick what color of lipstick they should wear?

I've looked at a lot of lad mags and it seems like a woman often wears lipstick that matches the color of her nipples.

Is there anything to this, or am I just crazy?
They're probably retouching the nipples to match the lips or vice versa. Magazines retouch everything.

There is nothing of value to be learned about women from "lad mags".

I'm having a hard time figuring out if this is a serious question or not.

You hit the nail on the head, reenum. Ignore the haters.

That explains all the women with their nipples out at the drug store I guess.

What does this say about women who use dark lip liner? Like so:

I'm confused - are you asking if women's nipples are naturally the same color as their lips? Or if porn mags intentionally do that? I think it's intentionally framed that way?

Too many question marks?

Dear Boy's Life,

I never thought this could happen to me! It was on my first ever camping trip with some of the other lads from the borough, and everyone was pitching tents and roasting weiners. Suddenly, an older boy I'll call "Guy," a wiry, dark haired man-child with smoky eyes and windswept hair, pointed out that my smoldering sausage was the same color as my cold-hardened nipples, which were at that very minute trying to bore their way out of my cotton tee. The other boys laughed, and I would have been humiliated, except there was something in Guy's voice that told me my forbearance would be rewarded. Boy was that right!...

Yes. And the same principle applies to men's neckties. including the plaid ones.

This is a totally serious question.

What I'm asking is whether women will intentionally or unintentionally match their lip color to their nipple color.

It's just something I've always wondered about.

Not something I check, no. There's little computers at the displays asking the color of your skin, hair, eyes, etc. Then certain colors or schemes are recommended.

The usual advice in girl mags is to put a swipe of the sample color on the underside of your wrist to see how it would look on your face.

Now, I'm not willing to stand here and say that no woman, ever, in the history of mankind, has matched their lipstick to their nipples. But I'm pretty comfortable with saying that it's very, very uncommon.

Doesn't the color of you lips affect the shade when applied?

Repeated for truth.

No, I've never in my life heard the suggestion that lipstick should match nipple color. There would be some very odd-colored lipsticks out there were that the case.

Doesn't the color of you lips affect the shade when applied?

Not much. Lipstick is thick and opaque. What you're checking for when putting it on your wrist is whether it enhances your natural skin tone, or makes it look too sallow, yellow, red, or pale. Makeup colors tend to have either blue/cool undertones or orange/warm ones. The wrong shade can be unflattering at best, and make you look sick at worst.

I don't even think I could pick my nipple color off of a shade reference.

Don't forget Barry M magic green lipstick, which I used to wear in the 80s and was amazed to see is still on sale in Superdrug.

huh... like any goth, I went through the black lipstick phase. I assure you, if anything non-cosmetic on my body turned that color I would have sought medical attention. I think even the bright retro red I wear these days would be a warning sign, or at the very least, an indication of some chafing.

OMG, I remember the magic green lipstick! I don't think it was called Barry M over here, but I know for sure I had some back in middle school. It made the most horrid shade of pink.

kellydamnit, I was just wondering without clicking essexjan's link - is that the stuff that made the horrid shade of pink? I guess so.

Since this is presented as a serious question, I'll give a serious answer:

Serious answer A: No, as far as I know, there is no tendency for women in general to (intentionally or otherwise) match lipstick color to nipple color. The idea kinda baffles me.

Serious answer B: it's worth noting that the photographs in lad's magazines any magazines are probably not reflective of the fashion or cosmetic tastes of the women being photographed. That is, it seems likely that their lipstick, attire (if any), and general styling has been chosen by someone else --- stylist, phtotographer, or artistic director. (Right? Is there anyone who knows whether this is correct? Is there a stylist in the thread?)

Serious answer 3: I can imagine there might be an aesthetic advantage to matching the shades of body parts in a photograph, either through cosmetics or processing and tinkering with the image.

(I had the magic green lipstick, too, but on me it was quite soft and rosey. I liked it.)

reenum, stylists do the makeup of the models in men mags. If you have ever worked with, been worked on or art diected a stylist around you'd know that they know a whole lot about the look that makeup creates. They are choosing the lipstick to make the women look good, and matching the nipple obviously will. They might help the nipples along (hell, even I've done that on a shoot and I only work in advertising), they might choose a shade that obviously compliments her skintone best, like her nipples already do.

Ladies who don't hang around in front of the camera all day are not primped in such detail. They are not pro makeup artists and what they are making look good with makeup is their face alone. Since they will be wearing clothes they might even be so bold to match their shirt instead.

It's so strange you asked this question, reenum.. I was just thinking about almost the same thing the other day but in the mens mags I read, I'm trying to match the guys nipple color with something else.
posted by MonkeyButter 14 May | 18:47
That would change day to day, situation to situation since nipple color changes.
posted by plinth 14 May | 20:32
it doesn't change all that much - certainly not as quickly or drastically as lipstick shades can change. I have at least 8 shades of lipstick and I'm not even a big lipstick wearer. I guarantee you that no matter how much my parts fade in and out of shade, they don't have the range my lipstick does. Everything from Cruella de Ville to seashell pink - it's about matching mood, outfit, skin tone, season, occasion, not about matching the rest of your body.

I also *totally* remember the "magic" green lipstick. Ha!

Who puts on makeup with their shirt off? As soon as you put on your shirt, you'd mess it up. Count me amongst those who have no idea what shade of pink her nipples are.
posted by desjardins 14 May | 21:54
I think that if a lady matches her lipstick colour to her nipples, she's choosing a colour that will go with her over-all colouring. (See Miko's comment.) That said, an easier way to make sure you're matching your lipstick with your skin tone is to choose a shade that matches the tip of your tongue.

In all sincerity, though, don't beleive ANYthing you see in lads' mags. Airbrush city, man.

Yep. That, or the inside of your lip -- those are supposed to be the ways to get a good neutral tone, or within a couple of shades of the most flattering tone to go with your natural coloring.

Personally, I tend to wear a couple of different shades within the same tonal family, though occasionally go outside that immediate set of shades/tones to match a specific outfit or because it's summer. (I will also wear a stronger shade of lipstick if I'm going with minimal eye makeup, while going with a more neutral or subtle shade of lipstick if I'm wearing more eye makeup.)

I do know what color my nipples are, but in more than 25 years of wearing makeup I have never once considered them in the course of choosing lipstick.
