I can't say I'm surprised. Politics until recently has been a pretty geeky interest, and to be a politician you have to be pretty squeaky clean. Saying you spent your twenties arguing Kirk versus Picard is less likely to hurt your chances than saying you were your campus's beer pong champion with the best weed hookup.

hey, I love Jack Ryan. I was seriously tempted to send him a box of thank-you chocolates and a tasteful arrangement of carnations and riding crops on election day. After all, if he hadn't fucked up so spectacularly the then-unknown running for it wouldn't have had much of a shot. ;)
