Apartment Herb Gardeners Of the World, I beesch thee! Windowsill. Chives. Sage. Problem.

[More:]

I've got two large plastic containers for my very-very bright eastern-exposure window. I've got a small thing of Chives and a small thing of Sage. Should I plant both in one large container and save the other container for another plant or should I plant them in separate pots so they have lots of space to grow?
They'll be fine together. There's only so much sage you can use. I'd use the other to grow basil - it's a great windowsill plant and in the summer I use it a lot. Any extra can be made into pesto.

Yeah, plant them together. No problem. I've done it many times. It works beautifully.

In they go! Sage is the only plant I got that doesn't mind not being watered and since it's impossible to kill chives, I'll keep them together so I have less maintenance.

Thanks!

Well, now that you've already done it, let me say that I would have advised you to grow them separately.

Mudpuppie - me too. Bear in mind that Chives get huge and take over whatever container they are in. But if you cut them back regularly, they should be OK. If you want to keep these for more than one season, I would decant them into separate pots. But that's no big deal.

I plan on cutting the chives a lot cause ..I love chives. A few snips are really good for adding a little kick to things. I've got another container coming, so I can just set that out for the Sage for when it starts to get overcrowded so..best of both worlds.

I now have some Sage, some Cilantro that looks like it's going to go to seed at ANY SECOND, two very healthy Basil plants, some Mint in a pot that's too small, and an apartment Christmas tree that I've managed to keep alive and growing since December. The little evergreens you can buy, I put one in a huge fucking container and it's kinda exploded. Not sure how long I can keep it going, but, hey, I kept it alive! that's ...something!
