The Not-pocalypse -a rant of porcine proportions or "Things I Wish I Could Say at Work But Can't"

Working in the lab the last few days, I feel like I have had ringside seats for the apocalypse.
[More:]
No no, it's not that the swine flu is that bad... because it ISN'T (no confirmed cases yet in our state and it turns out it isn't quite the mega nasty illness it could have been). It's watching people do one of 2 things that demonstrate how incredibly lame our species can be in a time of crisis that has me beating my head on my desk:

1. "OMG OMG OMG I have teh floo! Little Timmy MUST be tested no matter what! I don't care he's not sick! I pay my taxes! I AM ENTITLED!!!!!" Never mind the fact that we only have a limited supply of test kits that we SHOULD be saving for people who are actually exhibiting symptoms. Oh and let's not forget the fact that you are flooding the clinics and hospitals that, were this a real emergency, need to be focused on REAL patients. These are the same losers who demand antibiotics every time they get the sniffles. Thanks for the superbugs, asshole.

2. "Oh, fuck that. The flu isn't that bad. besides, they said it responds to the antiviral drugs! I don't need to wear a mask even though I have a wet hacking cough. Business as usual! If I get sick I will just eat some chicken soup and take the pills!" Gee thanks. of course, the other people you are spreading your germs to *might* be of a different opinion on that. You know, people with existing medical conditions, on chemotherapy, or just might be one of the one in 736,000 who actually DIES from it. Statistically small, but that is still one more dead person who didn't have to be thanks to your shitty attitude. Oh and those antivirals? Those are in limited supply too.

Jesus Christ on a crispy fucking cracker people! I will reiterate what I have been saying to patients all week: Wash your fucking hands once in a fucking while, especially if you come in contact with anyone or anything that might have been exposed to the virus (or any virus for that matter- DUH), cover your mouth when you cough, if you have a fever, cough, or sore throat see your doctor and get the test done. otherwise, don't fucking panic. Quite wasting resources and energy and go back to watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns while eating your frozen chicken pot pie and ignoring your kids, you suburban waste of space*!

Your local medical staff are all overworked and overwhelmed at the moment, not because there is a REAL crisis, but because your greedy self-interest is creating one. we are more than happy to give you any and all information you need to stay healthy, but you might actually want to LISTEN to the answers for a change.

*not all suburbites, "Raymond" fans, or chicken pot pie eaters are wastes of space. People who ignore their kids are, however.
Hear, hear. I've seen ridiculous behavior, too. Ugh.

For all I know that might have been what I had last month.

Here in BC they're saying stay home unless whatever you have is bad enough for a trip to the emergency room.

cheers. i am safely ensconced in a research facility where folks who want to say such things are at the very least too embarrassed to say such nonsense out loud.

My wife is a director of food services for a hospital group. A number of staff are atwitter about getting the flu but others still don't get why it is that they should not be coming to work when they are coughing or sneezing.

Swine flu: the overreaction overreaction

Our school district -- in a county where one case has been reported -- sent out a letter saying they were monitoring the situation and outlining their school closing policy and the like. The reaction to that is something like "FOX News told me it's just a mild virus so this health expert is full of it". Jeezopete, people, so if it's just like the normal flu and we don't worry about the normal flu, why do we spend billions of dollars manufacturing and distributing flu shots Every Damn Year?

Then there's our HR Dept., which sent out an announcement that basically said in its entirety: "Some of what you have heard about the swine flu is true. Some of what you have heard about the swine flu is untrue. Keep watching the news. If you have any questions, your HR Dept. is here to help." Uh...OK.

scody: that's actually pretty good for an HR dept.

Are you serious? That's excellent for an HR department. Of course, I'm still impressed when I see HR goons with knotted shoelaces...

My son was in hospital at the end of last week and the nursing staff there were already mightily sick of the whole thing. Mainly sick of the media hyping things up to the extent that people who tend to panic are panicking and overloading medical facilities. The worst case of media beat-up I've seen was a TV channel announcing on the "in our upcoming news" ad spots that Australians had been diagnosed with swine flu. Turns out they were two Aussies living on London. The problem is that people watch the shorts of the news while flicking between neighbours and some other drek and never see the whole news story, so the rumours spread that people in Australia have been infected.

I wonder, if you took the media out of the picture, whether this potential pandemic would even exist. I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but it seems to me that the biggest symptom of the outbreak is that it's all over the news.

Of course, I not only believe that some kind of "superflu" will do us all in in the end, but that it will play out just like The Stand, so who am I to judge?

That's the real problem. The news keeps harping on "PROBABLE" cases over and over again. "17 PROBABLE cases in the state of Washington and growing!". Everyone keeps asking me how many cases we have had and they REFUSE to believe me when I tell them NONE. "Well, I heard on the news...."

No, no you didn't. You were lead to believe by the news...
