I am genuinely confounded with this track - I swing from "oh shit - trainwreck!" to "hey, it's not bad - I'd listen to that again if I thought they'd written it."
Weird, weird cover. I'm interested in what others think.
Put me in the "like it" column. The background singers really make the song for me. Those gleeful, yet menacing refrains of "bum-bum-BUM-bum-bum-bum" give it a sinister, almost apocalyptic feel.
See now, the backing boms are what keeps this song in the dreadful part of the scale. But I think it's a reaction to knowing the source material first. It still sounds like an aging, past-their-freshness date country band seizing on indie cred to prop themselves up.
BUT..if I clear out the Stripes from my head and just listen to it as a de facto song, it's pleasing enough to make me wonder what else this band might be up to.
Hung jury, interesting - that reaction hardly ever hits me.
