Torn Between I have 5 of their t-shirts and I like some of his movies. . .[More:]It's astounding that American Apparel thought that they could get away with an unauthorized use of Allen's image for their advertising, then drag his name through the mud (of his making) when he sued.

There's gotta be more to it than that. Any judge or jury has to decide for Allen, if this goes to trial.

True. On the other hand, they a) didn't have to pay him for his endorsement, b) got to use his image anyway, and c) can likely duck out of the thing with a settlement and an apology.

In any case, they still got what they wanted. Kinda sneaky, actually.

Haven't they had advertising dust-ups in the past? I'm about to duck out, so I don't have time to look it up, but I vaguely remember previous controversies. Could have been another company, though.

you may be thinking if the numerous sexual harassment lawsuits. I don't think they've been sued for their ads before. (but they are often criticized for the "date rape" vibe most give off).

Yeah, I think that's it - there has been a lot of criticism of the atmosphere surrounding their shoots and the model selections and all that.

The last long piece I read about it made me decide to totally swear off this company. The tradeoff isn't worth it for me, and there are now other American-made t-shirt sources.

Seriously, it sucks. In some ways they're awesome. US made, they pay the people sewing a decent wage, etc. And even a lot of US made stuff is done in HORRID sweatshop conditions, with illegal immigrants treated no better than workers in sweatshops overseas. And since they're illegal they either don't know that their employers can't treat them like that, or if they do know, are afraid they'll be deported if they quit or report the company. The garment industry can be a real mess here. AA treats their people like gold in comparison- in some respects.

And then, you have the "owner walks around in a cock sock and expects the whole staff to blow him on demand" thing. (most of their models are employees in other respects as well- sewing, or in the offices, or whatever)

Ugh. I really wish they were evil in all respects. Or Dov Cherney would just leave the company operations to someone else. This odd good/evil contrast is just too much.

So what are other good american-made t-shirts?

Digression. . .a few years ago, when I was in NYC, I ran out of clean clothes and needed a t shirt. . .I went into an American Apparel on 8th Ave, and got a natural cotton shirt. . .and for the longest time thought that I had shopped at this cool place indigenous to Manhattan. . it was only when I noticed one near campus in my little burg that I realized that they are all over. . .
