Crosspost from the green Aye, chihuahua!
[More:]
My sister recently moved from Wisconsin to North Carolina to live with us. She moved rather quickly, and left her beloved pooch behind. I am trying to find a cost-effective way to get the dog here, because I can't really afford an added expense at this time.
Metachatters, do you have any ideas? Have you worked with any of the animal transport companies I find on the web?
When I moved to CA, I had to send my cats ahead. (They can't endure 20 minutes in the car, much less 4 days.) I flew them to an airport out here and then hired a pet transport service to pick them up and deliver them to the new house.

Not only did I not have complaints, but I'd like to rave about the service. The woman called me as soon as she picked them up, called me when they dropped them off, set up food and water for them (which I'd sent to her in a separate box). Overall, she took a huge weight off of me.

IIRC, the service I found was licensed and bonded and approved by the SPCA and all that. I don't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't exorbitant. (Otherwise I wouldn't have done it.)

Can't recommend any in Wisconsin, unfortunately, but I wouldn't hesitate to use one that had good reviews and whatever insurance/certifications are required out there.

Maybe call a local SPCA office, too, to see if they have any recommendations. I think that might be where I got the name of the one I used.

Definitely check into the Chihuahua rescue organizations on petfinder.com. A ton of rescues (look into regional breed specific rescues) have national transport teams in place. Some of them may be willing to help out if it means it keeps the dog in a home.
