Ubiquitous? The sister of a friend of mine insisted my friend borrow and read her copy of The Surrendered Wife to help her resolve her marital problems. My friend and I both have a slight, shall we say, distaste for the whole Surrendered Wife thing. Our email exchanges on the topic have been sardonic. On the notion that it might be fun to see if there were any good Surrendered Wife parodies out there, I googled “Surrendered Wife parody”… only to have one of my own MeFi comments pop up as the third hit in the list. Er. Maybe my Orange Swan activity level is getting a little out of control.
My sister and I have a joke. Whenever I am being a control freak or sweating something small with my husband, my sister will quietly say "surrender...surrender." It works every time.

Oh, there is a grain of truth in the SW school. It's always good to keep in mind that you can't control everything and that you need to be careful about how much and in what way your criticize someone. But there's a big difference in learning how to improve the way you relate to/negotiate with someone and suppressing your opinions and needs entirely.

These advice books for women.... [shakes head]. So many of them wrap truth and sound practical advice in ideological garbage. See also: The Rules.

Nah, it's just that MetaFilter has a very high Internet profile and anything you add there is likely to appear in the first few pages of a Google search.

What jason's_planet said, and to take it further: Quite a few times I have googled something regarding a Mecha post and found that very Mecha post at the top of google's list.

How often does google poll Mecha anyway?

Yrrr! I know that my discovery about a certain radio personality's failed relationship with a certain cartoonist is out there and led to an uncomfortable question at one of their appearances.
