This is what I did this weekend! [More:]Knackered, exhausted, dirty, & satisfied (Hmmm. so no change there then!)

Last November I started dismantling my son's playground as he'd grown out of it. I have been dreaming of growing my own vegetables for about 5 years now. So I finally started digging and cementing in posts to build some raised beds. The soil here is clay, you could bake patties of it in an oven and make coasters, so raised beds it was. I'm annoyed I didn't take more photos of each stage but it was winter, often raining and freezing hands in big dirty gloves kinda put me off.

Bed 1 was finished about 13th March, and I finally got Bed 2 finished last week and started planting. I'm a little too impatient though and in some cases I've planted too early .

Bed 3 is just an afterthought, a temporary arrangement for the beans, (although I'm so keen I already have a pumpkin, courgette and tomato under plastic cloches in here!) There is room to widen this significantly next year, but I'd need to do the whole cementing in the posts thing and I'm just too tired this year!

Just behind this Magnolia, there is a little triangle of really poor soil that I've tried to improve. I think that's a long term issue though!

I'm so very tired and am off for a hot bath! But it feels amazing to make one of my little dreams come true. ;)
Good job Wilder. I too am putting in new vegetable beds this year. Last year I didn't grow anything, but the year before I did in my two beds. Eventually I'll have a nice large garden, but that's down the road. Was going to try and dig this weekend, but snow intervened. Good thing is it's put some moisture in the soil to make digging easier. I also have some flower beds in front to prepare... So much dirt, and so little time...

These are fabulous! They look wonderful. I've been spending the past few weeks doing a similar raised bed thing, except in concrete - here are my front yard raised beds, still awaiting dirt:

Oh MGL! they are so cool, love the whole Gaudi thing you've got going with the mosaic!

So we're the hardcore gardening bunnies then?, :-)

It really is such a great feeling sitting on the balcony as the sun goes down, glass of white wine, watching the lettuce grow. Who'da thunk?!

Oh and I just heard from my man Bob from "Down the Allotment" that it's not too early for the beans, cool, maybe they'll survive after all.
