The foot saga (the (hopefully) Final Chapter) [More:] I went to the orthopedist in Manhattan today. He verified that the trouble had most likely been caused by avascular necrosis linked to repeated stress in poorly supporting shoes. He did not reccommend surgery, just continued rest until 3/31 and switching to orthopedic sneakers. So here I sit wearing my first pair of non-Chucks sneaks in about 2 decades, some nice black New Balance 993's with Lynco Orthotics inserts. They're pretty spiffy.

As I was paying for my new kicks, I was in line behind two nuns. I bid them 'Good afternoon,' because I did not want to get struck by lightning. Later on the train ride home, I was near a Latino guy and his roughly 7-year-old looking son. The son was wearing a t-shirt with a picture of a fish saying "I'm A Keeper."

"I like your t-shirt," I said and he giggled shyly. Later I noticed that he had a headless Spider-Man action figure. I pointed at it and said "Spiderman no tiene cabeza." He drew his finger across his throat made the appropriate sound and giggled like a loon.
Ack. Well no surgery is dandy. Ya can't wear orthotics in Chuck Taylors? Mrs chewie swears by her New Balances. Thems good shoesies.

Yay! I'm really glad to hear that you won't have to have surgery.

Your foot has been in my life so long. I can't remember anything else.

Well apparently according to the computerized sizer contraption, I have wide feet and the Chucks weren't doing them any favors.

993's are great shoes. Nice choice. I love my four year old 991's.

Uh-Oh.

I'm going to have to listen to more thrash metal and eat some White Castle to maintain my 'wrong kind of white person' status.

Avuncular necrophilia? gross!

Keen makes some Chuck-Taylor-looking shoes with a wider last, and I think they're even appropriate for orthotics.

Honestly, though, I think the stuff-white-people-like NBs might be limited to the trail runners and throwback sneakers.

New Balance. Whether or not white people like them and whether or not that's a bad thing, they're made in the US and are a big employer in my region. Rock 'em.

Good luck. Also, funny spiderman story.

Well I hope this is almost over for you. It's gotta suck. I've learned in the last couple years that I'm just a shitty, selfish person when I'm sick. I'm gonna be a lousy old person. Hope you're handling it better than I would. Hats off to Pips also!

NB is the Official Shoe of Crusty Old White Guys. Welcome to the club. Your AARP card will be arriving shortly.

I thought NB sounded familiar. I checked, and that's what I have. Those and my all black Chuck Taylors. 3 more weeks of vacation, eh? Just long enough to plan and complete a decent project.

I wear cheap old lady jeans with elastic waists but I also wear Saucony running shoes. To work, even. I have wide flat feet and they keep 'em smiling, I tell you.

You are of a Certain Age, my friend, and you need decent footwear, is all.

well done! I look forward to hearing more bookstore stories from you soon. Think of all the remarkable things you will have missed and can catch up on.

The 992's were a dud, so NB rushed the 993's out. There is a "remainder" shoe store down the block from where I work and I hope to snag a pair of 991's there, with some luck. I have never worn New Balance, but this post makes me want to try some.

cops to NB here also - I wear mine for the gym. Have no idea what number - I bought them because I have clown feet and they make the wide size. Nearly EEE here.

I'm wearing a pair of NB 859s on my clown feet right now. They're the only brand of sneakers that I've found that fit my giant flippy feet comfortably.
