This week on Cops Why do I torture myself like this?[More:]

Two old guys sitting in their truck, having a little snort out of a dime bag of coke. Super friendly cop talks them into admitting their use, both of them off to jail.

A guy tooling around on his bike, stopped for running a red light, allows himself to be searched. A meth pipe and outstanding warrants gets him brought into jail.

For fuck sakes, people, NEVER consent to anything and NEVER say anything! The answer to any cop asking "Do you mind if..." Is "Yes, I mind, I do not give you any permission to search."

So friendly, ha ha, hey no problem, we're all reasonable, and fuck you I am taking you to jail for a personal use level possession charge. It is sick.

FUCK OFF COPS.

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.
For fuck sakes, people, NEVER consent to anything and NEVER say anything!

That way, they'll have an excuse to detain you until the drug dogs arrive. Or, if there aren't COPS cameras following them, until they can come up with an excuse to taser you into submission, and then find the crack pipe.

The impression I get from COPS is that most people on that show have dealt with the cops a lot, from childhood on up.

That was perhaps a little harsh on my part.

Yeah, it's not like they're just going to say "Well, OK then, since you didn't consent, I'll be going now. Have a nice day!" Not in the US, anyway.

Saw that one, too, Meatbomb. I'm always telling them to shut up and lawyer up, but they don't pay attention.

Two guys snorting coke in a pickup lack judgement? And?

"lawyer up" ALWAYS! Even if you are a WITNESS, DON"T TALK TO THE COPS WITHOUT A LAWYER!

I come from an Irish Catholic family and so I have cops in the family and I say never talk to them without a lawyer. EVER. Even if you are just a witness.

apropos of nothing, the only episode of COPS I ever enjoyed was the crossover they did with the X-Files.

It was also the only episode of X-Files I ever watched til the end.

Heh. I come from a family of politicians, and I learnt from granma "don't trust politicians unless they're family. And sometimes not even then."

Now driving while brown/black is a whole other deal. When the Ex had long hair he'd get stopped all the time, have the car searched, the whole ordeal. He was advised to cooperate by his LULAC lawyer uncle. The house however, uncle told us to always refuse entry unless there was a warrant.

It seems every time I watch Cops I see cops treating teenagers like crap so I don't watch. I do love the Cops theme song.

Two old guys doing drugs? Usually people who do hard drugs don't get to be old. If you knew what doing hard drugs did to people and their families, you'd want to treat them like shit too. Am I missing something here?

I loved the episode of 'My Name Is Earl' when they were all on Cops. It was totally believable.

We must be from different planets, Melismata. Where I come from most everybody enjoys drugs. I am old, all of my friends are old, and we all enjoy drugs. The last time I checked my family was fine.

These two guys in the truck could have been me and my buddy. Not hurting anyone, just having a chat about old times, and enjoying a little toot of cocaine. When the cop started asking him to rat his friend out, so reasonable and in such an earnest problem-solving manner, I bet he thought maybe it would be OK, that this cop wouldn't ruin his life. No such luck.

I can't understand why the people consent to be on the show. The "yay I get to be on the teevee!" is that important of a motivator?

Yes, it is, actually.

Yes, Meatbomb, we're definitely on different planets. Where I come from people die from drugs at age 29, and destroy everything and everybody around them in the process. The TV shows where someone becomes an alcoholic in one episode and then is cured in the next make me furious.

I feel no ill will towards you personally, Meatbomb.

"even if you're a witness, lawyer up"

The incident at Duke U. a few years back taught us that lesson.
